THE IMPORTANCE OF SETTLING DISPUTES BETWEEN PEOPLE

Two friends stop speaking because of a misunderstanding. Members of a family become divided over an argument. Neighbours who once lived peacefully begin treating one another with hostility.

Sometimes, a disagreement becomes worse because people around them keep spreading information, taking sides or encouraging resentment.

As Muslims, we should understand the importance of reconciliation and helping people resolve disputes fairly.

ALLAH COMMANDS BELIEVERS TO MAKE PEACE

Allah says:

“The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.”

Qur’an 49:10

This verse reminds us that believers share a bond of faith and should make sincere efforts towards reconciliation.

Peaceful relationships strengthen families and communities. When disagreements are handled responsibly, people can avoid unnecessary hostility and rebuild trust.

DO NOT MAKE A DISAGREEMENT WORSE

Imagine two friends having an argument.

Instead of encouraging them to resolve the issue, someone begins sharing private conversations with other people. Another person adds unverified information, and soon the disagreement involves an entire group.

This is not reconciliation. It is making the problem bigger.

If you genuinely want to help, avoid spreading rumours, exaggerating what happened or encouraging either person to seek revenge.

Listen carefully and encourage respectful communication.

BE FAIR WHEN HELPING PEOPLE RECONCILE

Helping people settle a dispute does not mean automatically supporting the person you know better.

You must be fair.

Listen to both sides when appropriate, establish what happened and avoid making promises you cannot fulfil.

If the disagreement involves serious wrongdoing, financial rights, abuse or threats, the matter may require a qualified mediator, trusted authority or professional support.

Reconciliation should not mean forcing someone who has been harmed to accept injustice.

SOMETIMES, A SIMPLE CONVERSATION CAN HELP

Many disagreements continue because people stop communicating.

A sincere apology, an honest explanation or a willingness to listen can sometimes open the door to peace.

However, reconciliation requires genuine effort. Both parties may need time, accountability and clear boundaries before trust can be restored.

Do not rush people or dismiss the pain they have experienced.

BE SOMEONE WHO BRINGS PEOPLE CLOSER TO PEACE

You can contribute to peaceful relationships by:
– Avoiding gossip and unnecessary arguments.
– Refusing to spread unverified accusations.
– Encouraging people to communicate respectfully.
– Being fair when listening to disagreements.
– Seeking help from trustworthy mediators when necessary.
– Praying for peace and understanding between people.

HEART CHECK

It is easy to contribute to conflict, but it takes wisdom and sincerity to help people find peace.

Do not become the person who carries stories from one person to another and creates more problems.

Be a reason people find reconciliation, not a reason their disagreements become worse.

REFLECTION: When two people around you disagree, do you encourage peace or make the situation worse by spreading what you hear?

DU’A: O Allah, unite our hearts upon goodness, remove hatred and resentment from our relationships and guide us towards fairness, forgiveness and reconciliation. Ameen.
