BE GOOD TO PEOPLE EVEN WHEN NOBODY WILL REWARD YOU
Imagine helping a classmate with an assignment, only for them to forget to thank you. You assist someone who later refuses to help you. You do something good for a person, but nobody notices or appreciates your effort.
Would you still choose to do good?
Sometimes, we become discouraged when our kindness is not returned. We begin to wonder why we should help others when they do not do the same for us.
But as Muslims, we need to remember that not every good deed will receive recognition from people. Our intention should be to seek Allah’s pleasure, not simply to gain
applause or rewards from others.
DO GOOD FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH
Allah describes the righteous in the Qur’an:
“And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, saying, ‘We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.’” Qur’an 76:8–9 — translation of the meaning.
These verses describe people who give to others without demanding gratitude or repayment.
Their example teaches us that sincere goodness is not dependent on receiving praise.
When you help someone, give charity, comfort a person who is struggling or treat someone respectfully, remember that Allah knows what you have done.
Even when people fail to notice your effort, your good deed is not hidden from Him.
DO NOT MAKE GRATITUDE THE PRICE OF YOUR KINDNESS
It is natural to appreciate being thanked. Gratitude can strengthen relationships and encourage people to continue doing good.
However, problems arise when we believe that every act of kindness must earn us something in return.
If you help a friend only because you expect them to help you later, what happens when they cannot?
If you treat someone well only because they praise you, what happens when they stop?
Sincerity helps you maintain good character even when circumstances change.
This does not mean that you must keep giving to people who exploit you. You are allowed to have boundaries, manage your resources wisely and decline requests you cannot reasonably meet.
The lesson is to avoid making your good character depend entirely on other people’s reactions.
YOUR GOOD DEEDS DO NOT NEED AN AUDIENCE
Social media can make it seem as though every good action must be photographed, recorded or shared.
There is nothing inherently wrong with sharing beneficial activities when the intention and circumstances are appropriate. However, some acts of worship and kindness are best kept private.
You can help someone without announcing it. You can make du’a for another person without telling them. You can give charity quietly and treat people well when nobody is watching.
Remember that Allah knows your intentions.
SMALL ACTS OF GOODNESS MATTER
You do not need to be wealthy or famous to benefit others.
You can:
* Share useful knowledge with someone who needs it.
* Help with household responsibilities without waiting to be asked.
* Speak gently to someone having a difficult day.
* Give charity according to your ability.
* Respect people who have little influence or status.
* Refuse to join others in mocking someone.
Do these things sincerely, while remembering that you are also responsible for your own well-being and obligations.
HEART CHECK
People may forget what you did for them. They may fail to acknowledge your effort or return your kindness.
Do not let disappointment turn you into someone who no longer cares about doing good.
Renew your intention and remember the One for whose sake you are striving.
Your good character should not disappear simply because nobody is clapping for you.
REFLECTION: If nobody knew about your good deeds, would you still be willing to do them for Allah’s sake?
DU’A: O Allah, make my intentions sincere, accept my good deeds and protect me from showing off. Help me do what pleases You, whether people notice me or not. Ameen.
