CONTENT CREATORS, INFLUENCE AND THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EARNING ONLINE

Social media has created opportunities for young people to earn money, develop businesses, share knowledge, and build careers. Today, someone can use a phone to create videos, promote products, teach useful skills, or reach an audience across the world.

For many young Muslims, content creation may seem like an attractive career because it offers creativity, flexibility, and the possibility of earning an income from home.

However, content creation comes with responsibilities. The desire to gain followers, attract attention, and make money can sometimes tempt people to compromise their values.

As a Muslim, your online influence is an opportunity, but it is also an amanah—a trust that should be handled responsibly.

1. YOUR CONTENT REFLECTS YOUR VALUES

Every post you publish communicates something. It may educate, entertain, encourage, or influence the decisions of the people who watch it.

Before publishing content, consider what it promotes and how it might affect your audience.

Are you sharing useful information? Are you encouraging honesty and good character? Are you promoting something that could cause harm? Are you making fun of someone simply to attract views?

Not every post needs to be a religious reminder. Educational content, appropriate entertainment, business information, and other beneficial material can all have value.

The important thing is to create content responsibly and avoid using your platform to promote wrongdoing.

2. DO NOT SACRIFICE YOUR VALUES FOR VIEWS

Online platforms often reward content that attracts strong reactions. Unfortunately, controversial, humiliating, or misleading content can sometimes attract more attention than thoughtful material.

This can create pressure to do whatever will make a video go viral.

A creator may exaggerate a story, expose someone’s private life, spread an unverified claim, or participate in harmful trends simply to increase engagement.

However, popularity does not automatically make content beneficial.

Allah says:

*”And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].”*

*Qur’an 2:42*

This verse reminds us of the importance of honesty. As a content creator, you should not deliberately mislead your audience simply because false information may attract attention.

Your integrity matters more than a temporary increase in views.

3. EARN THROUGH LAWFUL AND HONEST MEANS

Content creation can generate income through advertising, sponsorships, affiliate marketing, subscriptions, product sales, and other arrangements.

However, not every earning opportunity is appropriate.

Before accepting a sponsorship or promoting a product, consider whether the product and the way it is marketed are consistent with Islamic principles.

Be particularly careful about promoting scams, fraudulent investments, gambling, prohibited products, or misleading financial promises.

If an arrangement involves a complicated question about Islamic permissibility, seek guidance from a qualified scholar who understands the details.

Remember that earning money online does not remove your responsibility to be honest.

4. BE TRANSPARENT WITH YOUR AUDIENCE

Trust is one of the most valuable assets a creator can build.

If you promote a product, do not make claims you cannot support. If you have not personally tested something, avoid pretending that you have. If a post is sponsored, disclose that relationship where required and in a way your audience can understand.

For example, if you are advertising a skincare product, do not promise that it will cure every skin condition unless there is reliable evidence supporting the claim.

Similarly, if you share educational or Islamic content, verify your sources before presenting information as fact.

Your audience deserves honesty, not manipulation.

5. RESPECT PEOPLE’S PRIVACY AND DIGNITY

Some creators build an audience by recording strangers, exposing private conversations, or sharing other people’s embarrassing moments.

Before posting a video or photograph involving someone else, consider whether you have appropriate permission and whether sharing it could cause harm.

Avoid turning another person’s suffering, mistake, or private struggle into entertainment.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that a Muslim is someone from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe.

*Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 10 and Sahih Muslim 40.*

This teaching encourages us to consider the effect our actions have on others, including when we communicate through digital platforms.

6. USE YOUR INFLUENCE TO BENEFIT PEOPLE

You do not need millions of followers before your content can make a difference.

A small educational page can help students understand a difficult topic. A modest business account can introduce people to useful products. An Islamic platform can encourage someone to learn more about their faith.

Consider the needs of your audience and the value you want to provide.

Instead of asking only, “How many people watched this?” also ask, “What did people gain from watching it?”

Engagement can help you understand your audience, but it should not become the only measure of success.

7. PROTECT YOUR OWN CHARACTER

Content creation can affect your time, privacy, relationships, and spiritual life.

You may become so concerned about posting consistently that you neglect your responsibilities. You may compare your progress with other creators and begin to feel inadequate. You may become overly attached to praise or discouraged by criticism.

Set reasonable boundaries. Make time for prayer, family, rest, and personal development. Learn to receive constructive criticism without allowing every negative comment to control your emotions.

Your identity should not depend entirely on your online popularity.

HEART CHECK

Dear young Muslim, content creation can be a useful skill, a legitimate career, and a way to benefit others. But success should not be measured by followers and income alone.

Build your platform with honesty. Promote responsibly. Protect people’s dignity. Verify the information you share, and do not allow the pressure to go viral to push you away from your values.

Let your online influence be a trust you handle with sincerity, not a tool you use at any cost to become popular.

May Allah bless our lawful efforts, protect us from dishonest earnings, and make our influence a source of benefit for others. Ameen.
