DON’T KEEP SCORE OF EVERY WRONG SOMEONE DID TO YOU

Have you ever forgiven someone but continued remembering everything they did to you? Whenever you have an argument, you bring up their past mistakes. Even when things seem fine, you keep remembering how they disappointed you.

Perhaps a friend betrayed your trust, a family member said something hurtful, or someone you cared about treated you unfairly.

It is understandable to feel hurt when people disappoint you. However, constantly keeping a record of every wrong can prevent you from finding peace and moving forward.

LEARN THE BEAUTY OF FORGIVENESS

Allah says:

“And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”Qur’an 24:22 — translation of the meaning.

This verse reminds us to consider our own need for Allah’s forgiveness when dealing with the mistakes of others.

We all need Allah’s mercy. We make mistakes, fall short and sometimes hurt people without fully understanding the consequences of our actions.

When someone sincerely apologises and tries to make things right, consider whether you can give them an opportunity to improve rather than continually reminding them of their past.

Forgiveness does not mean pretending that the wrong never happened. It means choosing not to allow resentment to control your heart.

STOP REPLAYING EVERY HURTFUL MOMENT

Sometimes, the person who hurt you has moved on, but you continue reliving the experience.

You remember their words, imagine what you should have said and repeatedly think about how unfairly you were treated.

Although reflecting on an experience can help you learn, constantly replaying it may deepen your pain.

When those memories return, acknowledge what happened without allowing it to consume your entire day. Make du’a, focus on what you can learn and redirect your attention towards beneficial activities.

You do not have to keep reopening an emotional wound to prove that the experience mattered.

FORGIVENESS DOES NOT MEAN ACCEPTING REPEATED HARM

This is important to understand.

Islam encourages forgiveness, but you are not required to allow someone to continue mistreating you. You can forgive a person and still establish boundaries.

If someone repeatedly betrays your trust, you may need to limit what you share with them. If someone bullies, threatens or abuses you, seek appropriate help and protect yourself.

You can release resentment while still taking reasonable steps to prevent further harm.

GIVE YOUR HEART ROOM TO HEAL

Instead of keeping a list of every wrong someone has done, ask yourself what you need to move forward.

Perhaps you need an honest conversation. Perhaps you need an apology. Perhaps you need to establish boundaries or accept that a relationship will not return to what it once was.

Healing may take time. Do not force yourself to pretend that you are fine when you are not.

Ask Allah to help you release bitterness, make wise decisions and treat others with justice.

Remember, you also want Allah to forgive your mistakes. Let that awareness encourage you to deal with people fairly.

REFLECTION: Are you holding on to an old hurt that continues to affect your peace? What healthy step can you take towards healing?

DU’A:O Allah, help me forgive where forgiveness is good for me, protect me from bitterness and guide me to respond to others with wisdom and justice. Forgive my shortcomings and have mercy on me. Ameen.
