CAN YOU REFUSE A REQUEST FROM YOUR PARENTS?
Islam places great importance on treating parents with kindness and respect. But does this mean a Muslim must obey every request, regardless of what it involves?
No. Respecting parents is a major responsibility, but obedience has limits.
WHAT DOES THE QUR’AN SAY?
Allah says:
“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment.” — Qur’an 17:23
Allah commands Muslims to treat their parents well, speak respectfully and avoid unnecessary hurt.
But the Qur’an also explains that parents must not be obeyed when they command a person to commit shirk.
Allah says:
“But if they endeavour to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness.”
— Qur’an 31:15
This verse establishes an important principle: a Muslim may have to refuse a parent’s request while continuing to treat the parent kindly.
WHEN MAY YOU REFUSE A REQUEST?
1. WHEN YOU ARE ASKED TO COMMIT A SIN
If a parent asks you to lie, steal, cheat or commit another prohibited act, you should not obey that request. However, you should explain your position respectfully where possible.
2. WHEN YOU ARE ASKED TO DO SOMETHING HARMFUL
If a request would expose you or someone else to serious harm, seek appropriate help and guidance. Respect does not require you to silently accept abuse or danger.
3. WHEN YOU CANNOT REASONABLY FULFIL THE REQUEST
Sometimes you may be physically unable to do something, or the request may conflict with a genuine responsibility. Explain the situation honestly and, where possible, offer an alternative.
Not every inconvenience automatically justifies refusal. Consider your parent’s needs and whether you can reasonably help.
HOW SHOULD YOU SAY NO?
Even when refusal is necessary, avoid insulting your parents or responding with unnecessary anger.
You might say:
“I understand what you want me to do, and I want to respect you. However, I am not comfortable doing this because I believe it would be wrong. Can we find another way?”
If you cannot help because of time, health or another responsibility, explain that clearly and respectfully.
WHAT IF YOUR PARENTS BECOME ANGRY?
A parent’s anger does not automatically make every request obligatory. At the same time, do not use this principle as an excuse to disregard their reasonable needs.
If the disagreement involves a serious religious matter, seek advice from a trustworthy scholar who can hear both sides. If you face abuse or danger, reach out to a safe, trusted person or appropriate support service.
HEART CHECK
Islam teaches both obedience to Allah and kindness to parents. You can refuse a sinful request without becoming disrespectful. Keep your words gentle, your intentions sincere and your conduct guided by the Qur’an and Sunnah.
May Allah help us honour our parents in ways that please Him. Ameen.
