THE LESSON OF PATIENCE IN SURAH YUSUF

Have you ever experienced a situation that made you wonder why Allah was allowing you to go through so much difficulty?

Perhaps someone you trusted disappointed you, your plans failed, or you waited for something important without knowing when it would happen.

The story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, in the Qur’an teaches us powerful lessons about patience, trust in Allah, and remaining upright even when life becomes difficult.

WHEN THE PEOPLE CLOSEST TO YOU HURT YOU

Prophet Yusuf was betrayed by his own brothers. Their jealousy led them to throw him into a well, separating him from his father, Prophet Ya’qub (Jacob), peace be upon him.

Imagine experiencing betrayal from the very people who should have protected you.

Yet, Yusuf’s story did not end in that well. Allah had a plan beyond what anyone could see.

Sometimes, we experience painful situations without understanding why they are happening. Although we may not immediately understand Allah’s wisdom, we can continue to seek His help and do what is right.

PATIENCE DOES NOT MEAN LIFE WILL BE EASY

Yusuf was later sold into slavery and faced another severe test when he was falsely accused and imprisoned.

Despite these difficulties, he remained faithful to Allah.

His story teaches us that being righteous does not mean we will never experience hardship. Sometimes, a person can do the right thing and still face unfair treatment.

What matters is how we respond to our trials.

Allah says:

“So be patient. Surely the promise of Allah is true.” Qur’an 30:60

Patience does not mean refusing to seek help or allowing people to continue harming us. It means remaining conscious of Allah, taking appropriate action, and refusing to abandon our faith because of hardship.

DO NOT DESPAIR WHEN RELIEF SEEMS FAR AWAY

Prophet Ya’qub endured prolonged grief over the loss of Yusuf. Nevertheless, he continued to hope in Allah’s mercy.

He told his sons:

“O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and do not despair of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.” Qur’an 12:87

This verse reminds us that we should never assume our present difficulty is the end of our story.

You may be struggling today, but you do not know what Allah has prepared for tomorrow.

Keep making du’a, take the means available to you, and seek support when necessary.

FORGIVENESS IS ALSO A SIGN OF STRENGTH

Years after his brothers betrayed him, Yusuf eventually reunited with them. He did not use his position to take revenge. Instead, he forgave them.

He said:

“No blame will there be upon you today. Allah will forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful.” Qur’an 12:92

His response teaches us about mercy and forgiveness. Forgiving someone does not mean pretending that their actions were acceptable. It means choosing not to let revenge control your heart.

LESSONS WE CAN LEARN

The story of Yusuf teaches us to remain patient during hardship, avoid despair, protect our character when tested, and remember that forgiveness can be an act of strength.

Most importantly, it reminds us that we cannot judge the entire course of our lives by one painful chapter.

Your present difficulty is not proof that Allah has abandoned you. Continue to trust Him, remain steadfast, and keep doing what is right.

May Allah grant us beautiful patience, protect our faith during trials, and bring us relief in ways that are good for us. Ameen.
