THE PROPHET’S ﷺ KINDNESS TOWARDS CHILDREN
Children are a blessing and a responsibility. They need food, clothing, education, protection, and, just as importantly, love and compassion.
Islam teaches us that children should not be treated with cruelty or humiliation. The life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provides a beautiful example of how to treat them with kindness.
THE PROPHET ﷺ SHOWED AFFECTION
The Prophet ﷺ did not consider showing affection to children a weakness.
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ kissed Al-Hasan ibn Ali while Al-Aqra’ ibn Habis was sitting with him. Al-Aqra’ remarked that he had ten children and had never kissed any of them.
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.”
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 5997.
This hadith reminds us that compassion is an important part of good character.
Parents and caregivers should not be ashamed to show children affection. A loving environment can help children feel safe, valued, and supported.
LISTEN TO CHILDREN AND GUIDE THEM GENTLY
Children are still learning how to understand the world. They will ask questions, make mistakes, and sometimes behave in ways that require correction.
Islamic guidance encourages us to correct wrongdoing without abandoning mercy.
The Prophet ﷺ was an excellent teacher. He guided people with wisdom and considered their circumstances.
When children make mistakes, adults should explain what is wrong, teach them better behaviour, and help them understand the consequences of their actions.
Discipline should not become an excuse for cruelty, insults, or humiliation.
CHILDREN DESERVE FAIR TREATMENT
Parents should strive to treat their children fairly and avoid showing favouritism that causes resentment or unnecessary division.
The Prophet ﷺ emphasised fairness when Nu’man ibn Bashir’s father wanted him to witness a gift given specifically to him.
The Prophet ﷺ asked whether the father had given the same to all his children. When the father said no, the Prophet ﷺ instructed him to fear Allah and act justly among his children.
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 2587; Sahih Muslim 1623.
This teaching highlights the importance of fairness in family life.
TEACH CHILDREN THROUGH YOUR EXAMPLE
Children learn not only from what adults say but also from what they observe.
If you want your child to speak politely, let them hear you speak politely. If you want them to pray, help them develop a love for salah. If you want them to be honest, demonstrate honesty in your own actions.
Teaching Islam should involve encouragement, consistency, and good examples.
A RESPONSIBILITY BEFORE ALLAH
Children are an amanah, a trust from Allah. Caring for them involves meeting their physical needs while nurturing their faith and character.
Allah says:
“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire…” Qur’an 66:6
This verse reminds believers of their responsibility towards their families.
Kindness towards children is not merely a personal choice; it is an important expression of mercy and responsibility.
May Allah help parents and caregivers raise children who love Him, follow His guidance, and grow into people of good character. Ameen.
