MU’ADH IBN JABAL (RA): A YOUNG MAN WHO UNDERSTOOD HALAL AND HARAM
KNOWLEDGE IS MORE THAN MEMORIZING INFORMATION
Being a knowledgeable Muslim is not simply about knowing many facts.
It is also about understanding your religion, recognising what Allah has commanded, and trying to live according to that knowledge.
One companion who stood out for his knowledge was *Mu’adh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه*.
Mu’adh رضي الله عنه accepted Islam at a young age and became known for his knowledge of Islamic teachings.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sent him to Yemen to teach people about Islam and guide them in religious matters.
This responsibility demonstrated the importance of knowledge, understanding and sound judgment.
The story of Mu’adh رضي الله عنه provides a valuable lesson for today’s youth: you do not have to wait until adulthood before beginning to learn your religion seriously.
You can start learning the foundations of Islam now.
Learn how to perform salah correctly.
Understand the meaning of the Qur’an you recite.
Learn what Islam teaches about honesty, modesty, relationships, money and the rights of other people.
Most importantly, learn from reliable sources and ask qualified scholars when you do not understand an issue.
WHY DO YOUNG MUSLIMS NEED TO UNDERSTAND HALAL AND HARAM?
Young Muslims face decisions every day.
Should I participate in this activity?
Is this way of earning money permissible?
How should I behave in this relationship?
Is it right to share this video?
What does Islam teach about my responsibilities toward my parents?
Without proper knowledge, it is easy to follow friends, social media personalities or popular opinions without checking whether their advice agrees with Islam.
Learning your religion helps you make more informed decisions.
FOUR LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF MU’ADH رضي الله عنه
1. Begin learning early.
Do not postpone learning Islam until you are older. Start with the essentials and build your knowledge gradually.
2. Seek knowledge from trustworthy sources.
Not every person who speaks confidently about Islam has reliable knowledge. Learn from qualified teachers and authentic Islamic sources.
3. Put knowledge into practice.
Knowing that salah is obligatory is not the same as establishing your prayers consistently. Beneficial knowledge should influence your actions.
4. Be humble about what you do not know.
It is better to ask a sincere question than to give an incorrect religious answer simply to appear knowledgeable.
KNOWLEDGE SHOULD IMPROVE YOUR CHARACTER
Learning about halal and haram should not make you arrogant or quick to condemn others.
Instead, it should make you more careful about your own actions, more sincere in worship and more considerate toward people.
When you learn something beneficial, practise it yourself and share it with others with wisdom and kindness.
HEART CHECK
Mu’adh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه became one of the companions known for his religious knowledge and was entrusted with teaching others.
His example reminds us that young Muslims can begin building a strong foundation in Islam today.
Do not be satisfied with knowing what is trending. Make time to learn what will benefit your faith and your life.
May Allah grant us beneficial knowledge, sincere hearts and the ability to act upon what we learn. Ameen.
