WHEN SOMEONE TREATS YOU BADLY, CHOOSE YOUR RESPONSE

Someone insults you in class. A friend betrays your trust. A person spreads a rumour about you, or someone deliberately tries to embarrass you in front of others.

What do you do?

Do you insult them back? Do you spread their secrets? Do you plan how to make them feel the same pain they caused you?

When people treat us badly, responding with anger can feel satisfying for a moment. But as Muslims, we should learn to respond in ways that protect our character and please Allah.

DO NOT ALLOW SOMEONE ELSE’S BAD BEHAVIOUR TO CONTROL YOURS

Allah says: “And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity will become as though he was a devoted friend.” Qur’an 41:34

This verse teaches us the value of responding to wrongdoing with what is better, where appropriate.

If someone speaks harshly to you, you do not have to respond with another insult. If someone tries to provoke you, you can choose not to participate in the argument.

Sometimes, a calm response can prevent a small disagreement from becoming a serious conflict.

FORGIVENESS DOES NOT MEAN ACCEPTING EVERY KIND OF TREATMENT

Choosing a good response does not mean allowing people to repeatedly disrespect, manipulate or harm you.

You can forgive someone while still setting boundaries. You can stop sharing private information with someone who has betrayed your trust. You can walk away from an unnecessary argument.

If you experience bullying, threats, abuse or repeated harassment, seek help from a trusted adult, teacher, counsellor or appropriate authority. You do not have to remain in danger to prove that you are patient.

Islam encourages good character, but it does not require you to pretend that harmful behaviour is acceptable.

THINK BEFORE YOU REACT

When you are angry, give yourself time to calm down before replying to a message or confronting someone.

Ask yourself:

* Will my response make the situation better or worse?
* Am I about to say something I will regret?
* Can I communicate my concern without insulting the person?
* Would it be wiser to step away and seek help?

You do not need to win every argument. Sometimes, walking away from a pointless fight is a better decision than having the last word.

PROTECT YOUR CHARACTER

People may not always treat you fairly. Some may misunderstand you, disappoint you or deliberately hurt you.

You cannot control every action of another person, but you can work on your own response. Do not let their behaviour turn you into someone who enjoys humiliating, insulting or hurting others.

Ask Allah for patience, wisdom and justice. If you have been wronged, you can seek appropriate help and pursue a fair resolution without becoming unjust yourself.

HEART CHECK

Your character is revealed not only by how you treat people who are kind to you, but also by how you respond when you are provoked.

Choose a response you can stand before Allah with.

Reflection: When someone treats you badly, do you respond thoughtfully, or do you allow anger to decide your next action?

Du‘a: O Allah, grant me patience when I am provoked, wisdom when I must respond, and courage to protect myself from harm. Help me remain just even when others are unjust to me. Ameen.
