WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I MISS THE FIRST RAK’AH OF JUMU’AH?
Friday is a special day for Muslims, and Jumu’ah prayer is one of its important acts of worship.
But what happens when you arrive late at the masjid? Perhaps the imam has already started the sermon, or the congregation is already praying.
You may wonder, “If I miss the first rak’ah, can I still complete Jumu’ah?”
Let’s understand the basic ruling.
WHY IS JUMU’AH IMPORTANT?
Jumu’ah is the Friday congregational prayer that replaces Dhuhr for those upon whom it is obligatory when its conditions are fulfilled.
Allah says:
> “O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu’ah, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade.”
Qur’an 62:9
This verse reminds Muslims not to allow business or other worldly activities to distract them from the Friday prayer.
WHAT IF YOU ARRIVE DURING THE SECOND RAK’AH?
According to the widely held scholarly position, if you join the imam during the second rak’ah and catch the bowing of that rak’ah before the imam rises, you have caught Jumu’ah.
After the imam completes the prayer with salam, you stand and complete one additional rak’ah.
This is because you caught one of the two rak’ahs of Jumu’ah.
However, make sure you join the imam correctly and do not rush through the prayer.
WHAT IF YOU ARRIVE AFTER THE IMAM HAS RISEN FROM BOWING IN THE SECOND RAK’AH?
If you arrive after the imam has risen from the bowing of the second rak’ah, you have not caught that rak’ah.
According to the majority scholarly position, you should complete Dhuhr as four rak’ahs rather than finish with only one additional rak’ah.
The precise details should be learned from a knowledgeable teacher, especially if you follow a particular school of Islamic jurisprudence.
WHAT IF YOU ARRIVE DURING THE KHUTBAH?
If you arrive while the imam is delivering the Friday sermon, enter the masjid calmly and follow the guidance of the imam and the school of jurisprudence you follow.
Do not create a disturbance or begin unnecessary conversations while the khutbah is taking place.
The khutbah is an important part of Jumu’ah, so make an effort to arrive early enough to listen attentively.
DON’T MAKE ARRIVING LATE A HABIT
Sometimes genuine circumstances cause a person to arrive late. However, repeatedly delaying your departure until the prayer has nearly finished can cause you to miss important parts of the worship.
Prepare early, arrange your activities around the prayer and make Jumu’ah a priority.
HEART CHECK
Dear young Muslim, do not treat Jumu’ah as an ordinary appointment that you can attend whenever you feel like it.
Arrive early, listen to the khutbah, pray attentively and learn what to do when you miss part of the congregation.
Your relationship with Allah deserves your time and attention.
