HOW TO BUILD TAWAKKUL AS A YOUNG MUSLIM
Have you ever worried about your future?
Maybe you are waiting for admission into a university. Perhaps you are searching for a job, trying to grow your business, dealing with family problems or wondering whether your dreams will ever come true.
You make plans, work hard and pray, but you still feel afraid of what might happen.
This is where tawakkul becomes important.
Tawakkul means placing your trust in Allah while making the effort to do what is right.
Allah says: “And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He is sufficient for them.” Qur’an 65:3** — translation of the meaning.
TRUSTING ALLAH DOES NOT MEAN DOING NOTHING
Some people think trusting Allah means sitting back and waiting for everything to happen.
But tawakkul is not an excuse for laziness.
If you want to pass an examination, study and ask Allah for success.
If you want a job, improve your skills and apply for suitable opportunities.
If you want to grow spiritually, take steps to strengthen your iman and maintain your salah.
Do your part, then leave the outcome to Allah.
You cannot control everything that happens in your life, but you can control the effort you make and the choices you take.
HOW CAN YOU DEVELOP TAWAKKUL?
1. Remember that Allah knows what you do not know.
You may not understand why an opportunity did not work out. Sometimes, you will only understand a situation much later. At other times, you may never know the full wisdom behind it.
Keep asking Allah for guidance.
2. Stop allowing fear to control every decision.
It is normal to feel afraid of failure. But fear should not stop you from taking reasonable, halal steps towards your goals.
3. Make du’a and take action.
Ask Allah for help, but also prepare, learn, seek advice and work diligently.
4. Accept that the outcome may be different from your plan.
You may want one particular opportunity, but Allah knows what you cannot see. If something does not happen as you hoped, allow yourself to feel disappointed while continuing to seek what is good.
5. Keep your trust in Allah during difficult moments.
Tawakkul is not only for the days when everything is working out. It matters when you are confused, disappointed or uncertain about the future.
HEART CHECK
You do not need to know exactly how your entire future will unfold before you can have peace in Allah’s plan.
Make your efforts. Pray sincerely. Seek halal opportunities. Avoid what displeases Allah.
Then remember that your responsibility is not to control every outcome. It is to strive in the right direction and trust your Creator.
Do your best, make your du’a, and trust Allah with what is beyond your control.
May Allah make us people of sincere tawakkul and grant us hearts that remain firm upon Him in ease and difficulty. Ameen.
