THE QUR’AN: WHY EVERY MUSLIM MUST READ, UNDERSTAND, AND LIVE BY IT
The Qur’an is the Book of Allah, revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as guidance for humanity. It is the foundation of Islamic belief, worship, morality, and way of life.
Yet, while many Muslims read the Qur’an regularly, not everyone takes enough time to understand its meanings, reflect upon its teachings, or apply its guidance in daily life.
The Qur’an is not a book to be brought out only during Ramadan, recited only when someone dies, or read solely to seek blessings. It is a source of guidance that Muslims should return to throughout their lives.
Every Muslim should strive to develop a meaningful relationship with the Qur’an by reading it, learning its meanings, reflecting upon its verses, and putting its teachings into practice.
WHAT IS THE QUR’AN?
The Qur’an is the revealed speech of Allah, sent down to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the angel Jibril (Gabriel), beginning when the Prophet was in the Cave of Hira.
Its revelation began when the Prophet ﷺ was approximately forty years old and continued over about twenty-three years.
The Qur’an confirms the central message of the Prophets before Muhammad ﷺ, calling humanity to worship Allah alone, live righteously, and prepare for the Hereafter.
Allah says:
“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:2
This verse reminds us that the Qur’an is not merely a historical text. It is divine guidance intended to shape our beliefs, decisions, worship, and character.
The Qur’an contains 114 surahs (chapters) and is traditionally divided into thirty juz’ (parts) to facilitate reading and memorisation.
Muslims believe that Allah has preserved the Qur’an, and it remains the central scripture of Islam.
WHY IS THE QUR’AN SO IMPORTANT IN ISLAM?
The Qur’an holds a unique position in a Muslim’s life because it provides guidance about our Creator, our purpose, our responsibilities, and our ultimate destination.
Here are some reasons every Muslim should make the Qur’an a priority.
1. THE QUR’AN IS GUIDANCE FOR HUMANITY
Allah revealed the Qur’an to guide people towards truth and righteousness.
It teaches us about Tawheed, worship, justice, honesty, patience, family responsibilities, financial dealings, and preparation for the Hereafter.
Allah says:
“Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most suitable.”
— Surah Al-Isra 17:9
When we face uncertainty, the Qur’an helps us understand the principles by which a Muslim should live. We should study its teachings carefully and seek reliable explanations when verses require further context.
2. THE QUR’AN STRENGTHENS OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ALLAH
Reading the Qur’an allows us to learn about Allah’s names, attributes, mercy, wisdom, commands, and promises.
It reminds us of His greatness and encourages us to turn to Him in worship, gratitude, repentance, and supplication.
The more we reflect upon Allah’s words, the more opportunities we have to deepen our understanding of our faith.
3. THE QUR’AN BRINGS SPIRITUAL COMFORT
Life brings difficulties, disappointments, fear, grief, and uncertainty. The Qur’an reminds believers of Allah’s mercy, wisdom, and promise of reward for patience and righteousness.
Allah says:
“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”
— Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:28
This verse reminds us of the tranquillity that comes through remembering Allah. Reciting and reflecting upon the Qur’an can help us find spiritual comfort while we continue taking practical steps to address life’s challenges.
4. RECITING THE QUR’AN IS AN ACT OF WORSHIP
Reading the Qur’an is itself an act of worship when done sincerely for Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged Muslims to recite the Qur’an and explained the great reward associated with doing so.
In a narration recorded in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, the Prophet ﷺ taught that reciting a letter from the Book of Allah earns a good deed, which is multiplied tenfold.
This encourages us not to underestimate small, consistent efforts. Even if we can read only a few verses each day, we should continue building the habit.
5. THE QUR’AN TEACHES US HOW TO LIVE
The Qur’an teaches principles that influence our everyday behaviour.
It commands justice, kindness, honesty, fulfilling trusts, respecting parents, caring for the vulnerable, and avoiding oppression.
A Muslim’s relationship with the Qur’an should therefore be visible not only in recitation but also in character.
Reading verses about honesty should encourage us to be truthful. Reading about patience should encourage us to control our reactions. Reading about charity should inspire us to help those in need.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN READING THE QUR’AN AND UNDERSTANDING IT?
Reading and understanding the Qur’an are both important, but they are not the same.
Reading the Qur’an involves reciting its Arabic text. Muslims are encouraged to recite it regularly and learn to pronounce its words correctly.
Understanding the Qur’an involves learning the meanings of its verses, the context of its revelation where relevant, and the guidance it contains.
Reflecting upon the Qur’an means considering its lessons and examining how they should influence our beliefs, choices, and behaviour.
Allah asks:
“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?”
— Surah Muhammad 47:24
This verse encourages us to engage thoughtfully with Allah’s words rather than reciting without reflection.
A Muslim who cannot yet understand Arabic can benefit from a reliable translation and explanation while gradually learning more about the Arabic language.
Translations help communicate the meanings of the Qur’an, although they cannot fully reproduce every feature of the original Arabic text.
HOW SHOULD A MUSLIM READ THE QUR’AN?
Muslims should approach the Qur’an with respect, sincerity, and a desire to benefit from its guidance.
1. BEGIN WITH A SINCERE INTENTION
Read the Qur’an seeking Allah’s pleasure, guidance, and reward rather than merely trying to finish a particular number of pages.
2. LEARN CORRECT RECITATION
Muslims should strive to pronounce the Qur’an correctly and learn the basic rules of Tajweed where possible.
If you are a beginner, start with the Arabic alphabet, pronunciation, and short surahs. Seek a qualified teacher who can correct mistakes and help you improve gradually.
3. READ REGULARLY
Consistency is more beneficial for building a lasting habit than repeatedly attempting a large amount and then stopping.
Choose a realistic daily target, even if it is only a few verses.
4. READ THE MEANING
Use a reliable translation in a language you understand. This will help you recognise the message of the verses and connect the recitation to your daily life.
5. STUDY TAFSIR
Tafsir is the explanation and interpretation of the Qur’an.
Some verses are straightforward, while others require knowledge of Arabic, context, authentic narrations, and scholarly explanation.
When you encounter a difficult verse, consult a trustworthy tafsir rather than relying on an isolated social media quotation.
6. PUT THE TEACHINGS INTO PRACTICE
Ask yourself what each passage teaches you about Allah, faith, worship, character, or responsibility.
Then consider one practical way to apply that lesson.
The purpose is not simply to finish reading the Qur’an, but to allow its guidance to shape your life.
COMMON MISTAKES MUSLIMS SHOULD AVOID WHEN DEALING WITH THE QUR’AN
Although Muslims love and respect the Qur’an, there are several mistakes worth avoiding.
1. READING ONLY DURING RAMADAN
Ramadan is an excellent time to increase Qur’an recitation, but the Qur’an is guidance for the entire year.
Try to maintain a regular reading habit after Ramadan ends.
2. RECITING WITHOUT TRYING TO UNDERSTAND
Recitation is valuable, but Muslims should also make an effort to understand the meanings of what they read.
Even studying a few verses with a reliable explanation can be beneficial.
3. RUSHING THROUGH RECITATION
Trying to finish quickly should not cause us to neglect proper pronunciation or attentiveness.
Read at a pace that allows you to recite carefully and reflect as much as you can.
4. SHARING VERSES WITHOUT VERIFYING THEM
Misquoting a verse, sharing an incorrect translation, or attributing a statement to the Qur’an when it is not found in it can mislead others.
Always verify quotations and consult reliable sources before sharing religious claims.
5. IGNORING THE QUR’AN’S TEACHINGS IN DAILY LIFE
The Qur’an teaches honesty, justice, mercy, patience, and fulfilling people’s rights.
Our aim should be to reflect these values in our dealings with family, neighbours, colleagues, and the wider community.
HOW CAN YOU BUILD A DAILY QUR’AN ROUTINE?
You do not need to begin with a complicated schedule. Start with a routine you can maintain.
After Fajr: Read a small portion of the Qur’an before beginning your daily activities.
During the day: Listen to a recitation or review a passage you are memorising, if your circumstances permit.
After Maghrib or Isha: Read the translation of a few verses and study their explanation.
Before sleeping: Review what you learned and consider one lesson you can apply the next day.
You can also keep a notebook to record unfamiliar words, lessons from the verses, and questions to ask a qualified teacher.
The most important thing is consistency. If you miss a day, return to your routine without becoming discouraged.
A SIMPLE SEVEN-DAY QUR’AN CHALLENGE
If you want to improve your relationship with the Qur’an, try the following seven-day challenge.
Day 1: Read Surah Al-Fatihah with its translation and learn why it is recited in Salah.
Day 2: Read Surah Al-Ikhlas and reflect upon its message about the oneness of Allah.
Day 3: Read Surah Al-Asr and reflect on faith, righteous deeds, truth, and patience.
Day 4: Read a passage from Surah Al-Baqarah about guidance, faith, or righteous conduct.
Day 5: Read verses about gratitude and reflect on the blessings Allah has given you.
Day 6: Read verses about repentance and Allah’s mercy, and consider what you need to improve.
Day 7: Review what you have learned and choose one teaching to put into practice during the coming week.
You can repeat the challenge with different passages and gradually increase your reading and study time.
CONCLUSION
The Qur’an is one of the greatest blessings Allah has given humanity. It teaches us about our Creator, guides us towards righteousness, reminds us of the Hereafter, and provides principles for living with faith and integrity.
Every Muslim should strive to build a lasting relationship with the Qur’an through regular recitation, understanding, reflection, and practical application.
Do not wait until you can read perfectly before beginning. Start where you are, seek help when necessary, and remain consistent in your efforts.
Let the Qur’an become part of your daily life, not merely a book you read occasionally.
May Allah make the Qur’an the light of our hearts, the guidance of our lives, and a source of benefit for us in this world and the Hereafter. May He help us recite it correctly, understand its message, act upon its teachings, and remain steadfast upon His guidance. Amin.
