YOUR MOTHER’S SACRIFICES: A QUR’ANIC REMINDER FOR YOUNG MUSLIMS
As we grow older, we sometimes become so focused on our own lives that we forget the sacrifices our mothers made for us.
We remember the things they refused to buy.
The rules we didn’t like.
The advice we thought was annoying.
But how often do we stop to think about everything they sacrificed for us?l
Allah says:
“We have commanded people to honour their parents. Their mothers bore them through hardship upon hardship, and their weaning takes two years. So be grateful to Me and your parents. To Me is the final return.” Qur’an 31:14
“HARDSHIP UPON HARDSHIP”
Allah specifically reminds us of what mothers go through.
Pregnancy.
Childbirth.
Sleepless nights.
Feeding.
Cleaning.
Worry.
Nursing us when we are sick.
Praying for us.
Supporting us as we grow.
And so much more.
Many of these sacrifices happen quietly.
DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE OLDER TO APPRECIATE HER
You don’t have to buy your mother an expensive gift to make her happy.
Sometimes what she needs is simple.
Help her.
Speak gently.
Ask how she is doing.
Do something without being asked.
Make du’a for her.
Call her.
Spend time with her.
And when she corrects you, try to respond respectfully.
YOU WON’T ALWAYS AGREE
Your mother may not understand every decision you make.
You may have different opinions about school, work, friends, marriage or your future.
But disagreement does not remove the obligation to treat her with kindness.
Allah says:
“And We have commanded people to be good to their parents.”Qur’an 29:8
APPRECIATE HER WHILE YOU CAN
One day, you may have your own children.
You may finally understand the exhaustion, worry and love that comes with caring for someone.
So while your mother is here, don’t take her presence for granted.
Make her smile.
Make du’a for her.
And remember:
Your mother may not be perfect, but her sacrifices deserve to be remembered.
May Allah bless our mothers, forgive them, strengthen them and reward them for every sacrifice they made for us. Ameen.
