SPEAK GOOD OR REMAIN SILENT
Have you ever sent a message in anger and wished you could take it back?
Or joined a conversation where someone was being mocked, only to realize later that your words had hurt them?
The Prophet ﷺ gave us a simple but powerful rule:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim
For young people, this hadith is especially important because today, our words are not limited to our mouths.
We speak through WhatsApp messages, comments, captions, voice notes, tweets, TikTok videos and group chats.
And once something is posted, it may be impossible to completely take it back.
THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK
Before you say something, ask yourself:
Is it true?
Is it beneficial?
Will it hurt someone unnecessarily?
Would I be comfortable saying it if others knew?
If the answer is no, sometimes the best response is simply to remain silent.
DON’T USE YOUR TONGUE TO HURT PEOPLE
Insults may feel like jokes, but they can leave lasting wounds.
Gossip may sound entertaining, but it can destroy someone’s reputation.
Mocking someone may make your friends laugh, but Allah knows the pain you caused.
Being a mature Muslim means learning that not everything you think needs to be said.
You don’t have to respond to every argument.
You don’t have to comment on everything.
You don’t have to prove yourself in every conversation.
Sometimes, silence is strength.
YOUR WORDS CAN ALSO BE CHARITY
Use your words to encourage someone.
Say, “You can do it.”
Say, “May Allah make it easy for you.”
Say, “I’m proud of your progress.”
Say something kind to your parents.
Defend someone who is being bullied.
Remind your friend about Salah.
Your tongue can either become a source of sin or a source of reward.
HEART CHECK
Dear young Muslim, before your next word leaves your mouth—or your fingers hit “send”—pause and think.
If it is not good, leave it.
Your silence may save you from a regret you cannot undo.
