GOSSIP IS NOT “JUST TALK”
“Did you hear what happened to her?”
“Let me tell you something about him, but don’t tell anyone.”
“I’m not saying it to gossip; I’m just telling you what happened.”
These conversations may sound harmless, especially when they happen among friends. But as Muslims, we need to be careful about what we say when the person being discussed is not present.
Allah gives us a powerful warning: “Do not backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it.” Qur’an 49:12
The imagery is strong because backbiting is a serious matter.
WHAT IS BACKBITING?
The Prophet ﷺ explained that backbiting is mentioning something about your fellow Muslim that they would dislike.
And here is something important:
It can still be backbiting even if what you are saying is true.
If it is false, then it becomes slander—and that is also a serious sin.
“BUT EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT IT…”
That doesn’t make it okay.
Someone’s embarrassing mistake doesn’t automatically become your story to share.
A friend’s private problem doesn’t become entertainment for your group chat.
Someone’s appearance, family situation, relationship, academic performance, financial situation or personal struggle should not become material for gossip.
THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK
Before saying something about someone who isn’t there, ask yourself:
Would I say this if they were standing beside me?
If the answer is no, perhaps it is better to remain silent.
And if the conversation has already started, you can change the subject, defend the person, or simply refuse to participate.
You don’t have to laugh.
You don’t have to add your own story.
You don’t have to forward the voice note.
You don’t have to send the screenshot.
SOCIAL MEDIA DOESN’T CHANGE THE RULE
Backbiting doesn’t become acceptable because it happens online.
Sharing someone’s embarrassing picture, discussing someone’s private life, exposing their mistakes, or spreading rumours can all cause harm.
Before forwarding that message, ask:
“Would I want people discussing me this way?”
LET YOUR TONGUE BECOME A SOURCE OF GOOD
Imagine if every conversation you had brought you closer to Allah.
Instead of gossip, talk about beneficial things.
Instead of exposing someone’s mistakes, make du’a for them.
Instead of spreading rumours, verify information.
Instead of embarrassing people, protect their dignity.
HEART CHECK
Your words may disappear from your phone, but they are never hidden from Allah.
Not every story needs to be told. Not every secret needs to be shared. Not every conversation needs your contribution.
Sometimes the most beautiful thing you can say is nothing
