IS IT LOVE OR JUST ATTACHMENT?
Sometimes, the heart can be confusing.
You meet someone, you talk every day, you think about them constantly, and suddenly their presence becomes a huge part of your life.
You start wondering:
“Is this love?”
But sometimes what feels like love may actually be attachment.
And knowing the difference matters, especially for a young Muslim trying to protect their heart and their relationship with Allah.
WHEN SOMEONE BECOMES YOUR WHOLE WORLD
Attachment can make you feel like you cannot function without another person.
You constantly check your phone to see if they have replied.
Their mood determines your mood.
If they are happy with you, your day is good.
If they ignore you, your entire day feels ruined.
You become afraid of losing them, even when the relationship is causing you pain.
You may even start compromising your values just to keep them.
That isn’t necessarily love. Sometimes, it is emotional dependence.
LOVE SHOULD NOT MAKE YOU LOSE YOURSELF
Real love should not require you to abandon your identity, your values or your relationship with Allah.
If being with someone constantly causes you to miss salah, hide things from your family, compromise your principles or participate in what Allah has prohibited, you need to stop and ask yourself what this relationship is doing to you.
Ask: “Is this relationship helping me become better, or is it taking me further away from Allah?”
Your answer matters.
ATTACHMENT CAN MAKE RED FLAGS LOOK INVISIBLE
When you are deeply attached to someone, you may start making excuses for their behaviour.
“They didn’t mean it.” “They will change.”
“They only acted that way because they were angry.” “They really love me.”
Sometimes, we become so afraid of losing someone that we ignore things we would normally recognise as unhealthy.
Attachment can make you hold onto something simply because you don’t want to experience the pain of letting go.
But not everything you desperately want is necessarily good for you.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO CHASE LOVE
There is nothing wrong with wanting to be loved.
Allah created human beings with the desire for companionship and affection.
But you don’t need to chase love at the expense of your peace or your deen.
If marriage is what you desire, ask Allah for a spouse who will be good for your dunya and your Akhirah.
If you are not ready for marriage, don’t allow loneliness to push you into relationships that leave your heart more broken than before.
Sometimes, waiting is protection.
LOVE SHOULD HAVE PURPOSE
Islam doesn’t tell us that feelings are sinful.
You cannot always control who you develop feelings for.
What matters is what you choose to do with those feelings.
If you genuinely care about someone and marriage is possible, approach the situation in a way that respects Islamic boundaries and involves the necessary people.
Don’t build an entire future around secret conversations and promises that may never become reality.
Your heart deserves clarity, not endless uncertainty.
WHEN YOU HAVE TO LET GO
Sometimes the hardest thing you can do is accept that someone you love is not good for you.
You may cry, you may miss them, you may wonder if you made the wrong decision, but missing someone does not mean you should return to something harmful.
Healing takes time, give yourself permission to grieve without going back to what Allah may be protecting you from.
ASK YOURSELF THE HARD QUESTION
Before calling something love, ask yourself:
Does this relationship bring me closer to Allah or further away?
Can I be myself without compromising my values?
Am I emotionally dependent on this person?
Would I be proud of this relationship if it were handled in a halal and respectful way?
Am I holding onto this person because they are good for me, or because I am afraid of being alone?
Sometimes, the answers reveal more than our feelings do.
LOVE ALLAH FIRST
People can leave, feelings can change, relationships can end but Allah remains.
Never make a human being the centre of your world when Allah should be at the centre of your heart.
Love people, care for people, appreciate people but don’t allow your attachment to anyone to become stronger than your commitment to Allah.
It’s because the healthiest love is not the love that makes you lose yourself, it is the kind of love that helps you become a better person while keeping Allah at the centre of your life.
