Among the unnamed people honoured in the Qur’an is the mother of Prophet Musa (AS). Her name is not mentioned, yet her story is one of the greatest examples of faith, courage, and complete reliance upon Allah.
She lived during the reign of Pharaoh, who had ordered that every newborn Israelite boy be killed. It was a time of fear and uncertainty. When she gave birth to Musa, she faced an unimaginable choice. Keeping him at home meant risking his life. Giving him up seemed equally impossible.
At that moment, Allah inspired her with an instruction that no mother would naturally think of:
“And We inspired the mother of Musa, saying, ‘Breastfeed him. But when you fear for him, cast him into the river, and do not fear or grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and make him one of the Messengers.'” (Qur’an 28:7)
Human logic would have questioned this command. How could placing a helpless baby into a river be the safest option? Yet this is where her faith shone. She trusted Allah’s promise even when she could not understand His plan.
Imagine the emotions she must have experienced as she placed her child into the river. Every instinct of motherhood would have urged her to hold on to him. Yet she surrendered her fears to Allah, believing that His protection was greater than her own.
After Musa was carried away, her heart was filled with anxiety. The Qur’an captures her emotions with remarkable tenderness:
“And the heart of Musa’s mother became empty. She was about to disclose his identity had We not strengthened her heart so that she would remain among the believers.” (Qur’an 28:10)
This verse reminds us that having faith does not mean never feeling afraid. Even the most righteous believers experience moments of fear, sadness, and uncertainty. What distinguishes them is that they continue to trust Allah despite those emotions.
Allah fulfilled every part of His promise. Musa was rescued from the river, brought into Pharaoh’s own palace, and eventually returned to his mother so she could nurse and care for him. The very ruler who sought to kill him unknowingly became the means by which Allah protected him.
The story of Musa’s mother teaches one of the greatest lessons in the Qur’an: when Allah makes a promise, no force on earth can prevent it from coming to pass.
It also teaches that sometimes the path to Allah’s mercy does not make sense to us in the moment. We may be asked to let go of something we love, endure a painful trial, or walk into uncertainty. But just as Allah cared for Musa in the river, He remains fully capable of caring for His servants through every challenge they face.
Reflection
There are moments in every believer’s life when the future feels uncertain and the way forward is unclear. The mother of Musa reminds us that trusting Allah does not require seeing the entire path. It requires believing that the One who guides the river is also guiding your life.
Her name may not be mentioned in the Qur’an, but her trust in Allah has become an everlasting example for every believer who struggles to hold on to hope.
