JUMU’AH: DON’T LET THIS FRIDAY PASS YOU BY
Introduction
Every week, Allah blesses the Muslim Ummah with a day unlike any other the day of Jumu’ah. It is not merely the beginning of the weekend or a day to attend a congregational prayer. It is the greatest day of the week, a weekly Eid for Muslims and a recurring opportunity to renew our faith, seek Allah’s forgiveness, and increase our good deeds.
Unfortunately, many Muslims have reduced Jumu’ah to a routine. They rush to the mosque moments before the khutbah begins, pray the two rak’ahs, exchange greetings with friends, and continue with life as usual. While attending the prayer is an obligation for eligible Muslim men, the true blessings of Jumu’ah extend far beyond the prayer itself.
Every Friday arrives carrying countless opportunities for forgiveness, answered supplications, and spiritual renewal. The question is whether we make the most of them.
Why Is Friday So Special?
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he entered Paradise, on it he was expelled from it, and the Hour will not be established except on Friday.”
(Sahih Muslim)
This hadith reminds us that Friday has held a special status since the very beginning of human history. It is a day chosen by Allah, filled with blessings and honour.
For believers, every Friday is an opportunity to strengthen their relationship with Allah before another week begins.
Prepare for Jumu’ah Before You Leave Home
The blessings of Jumu’ah begin long before arriving at the mosque.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged Muslims to perform ghusl (ritual bath), wear clean and respectable clothing, apply perfume (for men), and present themselves in the best possible manner.
Allah loves cleanliness, and Jumu’ah is an occasion that deserves special preparation.
Arriving early at the mosque also carries immense rewards. The Prophet ﷺ explained that those who arrive earliest receive greater rewards than those who come later.
Instead of treating Jumu’ah as an appointment that can be reached at the last minute, Muslims should treat it as an honoured meeting with Allah.
Listen to the Khutbah with Full Attention
The khutbah is not a formality before the prayer.
It is an essential act of worship designed to educate, remind, and guide the Muslim community.
The Prophet ﷺ warned against speaking during the khutbah, even to tell someone else to remain quiet.
In today’s world, this also includes checking mobile phones, browsing social media, replying to messages, or engaging in unnecessary conversations.
The few minutes spent listening attentively may contain a reminder that transforms one’s life.
Increase Salawat Upon the Prophet ﷺ
Friday is one of the best days to send abundant blessings upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
He said:
“Increase your blessings upon me on Friday, for your blessings are presented to me.”
(Abu Dawud)
Saying:
Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad…
throughout the day is among the easiest acts of worship with tremendous reward.
Love for the Prophet ﷺ is demonstrated not merely through words but by remembering him frequently and following his Sunnah.
Recite Surah Al-Kahf
Among the recommended acts of Friday is the recitation of Surah Al-Kahf.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light that shines for him between this Friday and the next.”
(Al-Hakim; authenticated by many scholars)
The surah contains timeless lessons about faith, trials, knowledge, wealth, humility, and reliance upon Allah.
Even if one cannot complete it in a single sitting, making time to recite it during the day is a valuable Sunnah.
Search for the Hour of Acceptance
One of the unique blessings of Friday is the existence of a special period during which Allah answers the supplications of His servants.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is an hour on Friday during which no Muslim stands in prayer asking Allah for something good except that He grants it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
Although scholars differ regarding its exact timing, many hold that it is during the last hour before Maghrib.
This is an excellent time to make sincere du’a for yourself, your family, the Muslim Ummah, and those facing hardship around the world.
Don’t Let Friday End Without Repentance
Every Friday offers a fresh opportunity to return to Allah.
Reflect on the week that has passed.
Ask yourself:
- Have I fulfilled my prayers properly?
- Have I wronged anyone?
- Have I neglected my relationship with Allah?
- What can I improve before next Friday?
A few moments of sincere repentance can erase sins and renew the heart.
Allah’s mercy remains open for those who sincerely seek His forgiveness.
Make This Friday Different
Rather than allowing Friday to become another routine day, make a conscious effort to maximise its blessings.
Attend Jumu’ah early.
Listen carefully to the khutbah.
Increase your remembrance of Allah.
Recite Surah Al-Kahf.
Send abundant salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ.
Make heartfelt du’a.
Spend time with family.
Give charity if you are able.
Leave the mosque with a sincere intention to become a better Muslim than you were when you entered.
Conclusion
Every Friday is a gift from Allah. It is a weekly reminder that no matter how difficult the past week may have been, the door of mercy remains open.
Perhaps this Jumu’ah will be the one in which your du’a is accepted.
Perhaps it will be the Friday on which Allah forgives your sins.
Perhaps it will be the day that inspires a change which brings you closer to Him.
Do not let this blessed day pass like any other.
Approach it with gratitude, worship, humility, and hope, for the greatest success is not simply attending Jumu’ah, but leaving it with a heart that is closer to Allah than it was before.
Jumu’ah Mubarak. May Allah accept our prayers, forgive our shortcomings, answer our supplications, and make us among those who benefit from the blessings of this noble day. Ameen.
