ISLAM EXPLAINED: WHAT IS TAWAKKUL? TRUSTING ALLAH THE RIGHT WAY
"And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him." — Qur'an 65:3
INTRODUCTION
One of the greatest qualities a believer can develop is Tawakkul complete trust and reliance upon Allah.
Every human being experiences moments of uncertainty. We worry about the future, struggle with difficult decisions, face unexpected challenges, and sometimes feel overwhelmed by situations beyond our control.
Islam does not teach believers to ignore their problems or pretend difficulties do not exist. Instead, Islam teaches us how to face those challenges with a heart that is connected to Allah.
That connection is Tawakkul.
Tawakkul means doing what is within your ability while placing your ultimate trust in Allah. It is the balance between effort and dependence between working hard and knowing that the final outcome belongs to Allah alone.
WHAT DOES TAWAKKUL MEAN?
The word Tawakkul (توكل) comes from the Arabic root related to placing one’s trust in someone and relying upon them.
In Islam, Tawakkul means relying on Allah with complete confidence, believing that:
- Allah knows what is best for us.
- Allah controls every outcome.
- Allah’s wisdom is greater than our understanding.
- Whatever Allah decrees carries a purpose.
A person with Tawakkul does not believe that they control everything. Instead, they recognize that they have responsibilities, but Allah has ultimate control.
TAWAKKUL DOES NOT MEAN DOING NOTHING
One of the biggest misunderstandings about Tawakkul is thinking that trusting Allah means abandoning effort.
Islam does not teach laziness.
A person cannot say:
“I will not work because Allah will provide.”
“I will not study because Allah knows my result.”
“I will not seek treatment because Allah will cure me.”
This is not Tawakkul. This is neglecting responsibility.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught believers to take action while trusting Allah.
A man once asked the Prophet ﷺ whether he should tie his camel or leave it untied and trust Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Tie it and trust in Allah.”
(Jami’ at-Tirmidhi)
This beautiful teaching explains the balance of Islam:
Take the necessary steps, then leave the outcome to Allah.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRUSTING ALLAH AND TRUSTING YOURSELF
Human beings naturally depend on things around them:
- Their wealth
- Their job
- Their knowledge
- Their connections
- Their abilities
While these things are important, a believer understands that they are only means.
The ultimate source of success is Allah.
A person may have a perfect plan, but circumstances can change.
A person may have great wealth, but wealth can disappear.
A person may have many connections, but only Allah controls results.
Tawakkul teaches the heart not to become attached to the means but to remain attached to the One who created the means.
WHY IS TAWAKKUL IMPORTANT?
1. TAWAKKUL BRINGS PEACE TO THE HEART
One of the greatest struggles of human beings is worrying about things they cannot control.
The past cannot be changed.
The future cannot be guaranteed.
But Tawakkul gives believers peace because they know Allah is managing what they cannot see.
Allah says:
“Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.”
— Qur’an 9:40
When a believer trusts Allah, difficulties do not necessarily disappear, but the heart becomes stronger in facing them.
2. TAWAKKUL STRENGTHENS FAITH
True faith requires trusting Allah even when we do not understand His plans.
Sometimes Allah delays something because He is protecting us.
Sometimes Allah removes something because He is preparing something better.
Sometimes a hardship becomes the reason a person returns closer to Allah.
Tawakkul allows believers to say:
“Allah knows what I do not know.”
3. TAWAKKUL HELPS US HANDLE LIFE’S TESTS
Every person will experience challenges.
The believer with Tawakkul approaches difficulties differently.
Instead of asking:
“Why is this happening to me?”
They learn to ask:
“What does Allah want me to learn from this?”
They continue making effort, continue making dua, and continue believing in Allah’s wisdom.
4. TAWAKKUL PROTECTS THE HEART FROM EXCESSIVE WORRY
Worry often comes from feeling that everything depends on us.
Tawakkul reminds us:
- Our provision comes from Allah.
- Our future is known by Allah.
- Our struggles are seen by Allah.
- Our efforts are never wasted by Allah.
This does not remove responsibility; it removes unnecessary fear.
EXAMPLES OF TAWAKKUL IN DAILY LIFE
A STUDENT
A student with Tawakkul studies sincerely, prepares properly, and then trusts Allah with the result.
They do not become arrogant after success or hopeless after failure because they know Allah controls outcomes.
A BUSINESS OWNER
A Muslim business owner with Tawakkul works honestly, plans carefully, and makes decisions responsibly.
If success comes, they thank Allah.
If challenges come, they remain patient and seek better solutions.
SOMEONE FACING HARDSHIP
A person going through difficulty with Tawakkul does not give up.
They seek help, make dua, and believe that Allah can create solutions from situations that seem impossible.
HOW CAN WE DEVELOP TAWAKKUL?
1. KNOW ALLAH BETTER
The stronger our understanding of Allah’s names and attributes, the stronger our trust becomes.
Knowing that Allah is:
- Al-Wakeel (The Trustee)
- Ar-Razzaq (The Provider)
- Al-Hakeem (The Most Wise)
helps the heart rely upon Him.
2. MAKE SINCERE DUA
Dua is one of the greatest expressions of Tawakkul.
When we raise our hands to Allah, we acknowledge that He is the One who can change circumstances and provide solutions.
3. REMEMBER ALLAH’S PAST FAVOURS
When facing uncertainty, remember the times Allah helped you before.
The same Allah who carried you through previous difficulties is capable of helping you again.
4. ACCEPT ALLAH’S DECREE
Tawakkul requires accepting that Allah’s plan is always based on wisdom.
This does not mean we stop trying. It means we accept that the final decision belongs to Allah.
COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT TAWAKKUL
“If I Trust Allah, I Don’t Need To Plan”
False.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged preparation while maintaining trust in Allah.
Planning is part of responsibility.
“If Something Goes Wrong, My Tawakkul Was Weak”
Not necessarily.
Even the most righteous people faced hardship.
Prophets experienced trials, loss, and difficulty.
Tawakkul is not measured by having a problem-free life. It is measured by how connected your heart remains to Allah during difficulties.
“Tawakkul Means I Should Not Feel Sad”
False.
Islam does not deny human emotions.
Prophet Ya’qub (Jacob) عليه السلام grieved deeply over the loss of his son Yusuf (Joseph) عليه السلام.
The difference is that believers do not allow sadness to remove their trust in Allah.
THE REWARD OF RELYING UPON ALLAH
Allah promises great rewards for those who depend upon Him.
Allah says:
“Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him.”
— Qur’an 3:159
Imagine being among those whom Allah loves.
Tawakkul is not simply a coping mechanism. It is a pathway to earning Allah’s love and strengthening our relationship with Him.
LESSONS WE CAN TAKE AWAY
Tawakkul teaches us that we are responsible for our efforts, but Allah controls the results.
It teaches us to work without arrogance, struggle without despair, and hope without fear.
The believer does not walk through life believing everything depends on them.
They walk knowing that Allah is watching, Allah is guiding, and Allah is enough.
CONCLUSION
Tawakkul is one of the greatest sources of strength for a Muslim.
It allows believers to face uncertainty with confidence, hardship with patience, and success with gratitude.
The world may change. Plans may fail. Circumstances may shift.
But the believer who truly trusts Allah knows that nothing happens outside His knowledge and wisdom.
Take the steps. Make the effort. Seek Allah’s help. Then leave the outcome to Him.
Because whoever relies upon Allah Allah is sufficient for them.
May Allah make us among those who have sincere Tawakkul, trust His wisdom, and remain connected to Him in every situation. Ameen.
