ISLAM EXPLAINED: WHY DO MUSLIMS BELIEVE IN ALLAH?
Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence." — Qur'an 2:255
INTRODUCTION
The foundation of Islam begins with one central belief:
There is no one worthy of worship except Allah.
This belief, known as Tawheed (the oneness of Allah), is the heart of Islamic faith. Every act of worship, every prayer, every sacrifice, and every aspect of a Muslim’s life is built upon this understanding.
But what does it truly mean to believe in Allah?
For Muslims, believing in Allah is not simply accepting that a Creator exists. It means recognising Allah as the only One who created, sustains, guides, and deserves complete devotion.
It means understanding that behind the universe, behind life, and behind our existence is a Creator whose wisdom and mercy surround everything.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BELIEVE IN ALLAH?
Belief in Allah means accepting that Allah is:
- The Creator of everything that exists
- The One who controls the universe
- The Source of all blessings
- The One who deserves worship
- The One who knows everything and has power over everything
A Muslim believes that nothing happens outside Allah’s knowledge and permission.
Allah says:
“Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs.”
— Qur’an 39:62
This belief gives Muslims a clear understanding of their place in the world.
We are not created by accident.
We are created by Allah with purpose and responsibility.
WHY DO MUSLIMS BELIEVE THERE IS ONE GOD?
Islam teaches that the universe itself points towards the existence and greatness of its Creator.
When we look at creation, we see order, balance, and design.
The movement of planets, the complexity of human life, the balance of nature, and the existence of consciousness all point toward a Creator with knowledge and power.
Allah says:
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.”
— Qur’an 3:190
Islam encourages reflection.
Faith is not built on ignoring reason; it is built upon recognising the signs Allah has placed throughout creation.
THE CONCEPT OF TAWHEED
The central message of all prophets was Tawheed the worship of one God.
From Prophet Adam عليه السلام to Prophet Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus), and Muhammad ﷺ, the message remained consistent:
Worship Allah alone.
Allah says:
“And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, saying, ‘Worship Allah and avoid false gods.'”
— Qur’an 16:36
Islam teaches that prophets were not sent to introduce different religions. They were sent to call humanity back to the worship of the One Creator.
THE THREE DIMENSIONS OF BELIEF IN ALLAH
Islamic scholars explain belief in Allah through three important areas:
1. BELIEVING ALLAH IS THE ONLY CREATOR AND CONTROLLER
Everything in existence belongs to Allah.
He gives life.
He provides sustenance.
He controls what happens in the universe.
A believer understands that all blessings ultimately come from Him.
2. WORSHIPPING ALLAH ALONE
Belief in Allah means directing acts of worship only to Him.
This includes:
- Prayer
- Supplication
- Seeking forgiveness
- Reliance
- Gratitude
- Sacrifice
A Muslim does not worship creation because creation itself is dependent upon Allah.
3. KNOWING ALLAH THROUGH HIS NAMES AND ATTRIBUTES
Allah has beautiful names that teach believers about His perfection.
He is:
Ar-Rahman — The Most Merciful
Al-Ghafur — The Most Forgiving
Al-Hakeem — The Most Wise
Al-‘Aleem — The All-Knowing
Al-Wadud — The Most Loving
Learning about Allah’s names strengthens the relationship between the believer and their Creator.
HOW DOES BELIEF IN ALLAH CHANGE A PERSON’S LIFE?
1. IT GIVES LIFE MEANING
A person who believes in Allah understands that life has a purpose.
They are not simply here to eat, work, earn money, and eventually disappear.
They are here to worship Allah and prepare for the eternal life after death.
2. IT BRINGS PEACE TO THE HEART
Life contains uncertainty.
People experience loss, disappointment, and fear.
Belief in Allah gives the heart stability because believers know they are never alone.
Allah says:
“He is with you wherever you are.”
— Qur’an 57:4
This does not mean Allah is physically present everywhere, but that His knowledge, power, and awareness encompass all things.
3. IT FREES PEOPLE FROM DEPENDING ON CREATION
When a person understands Allah’s greatness, they stop making worldly things the centre of their life.
They appreciate wealth without worshipping wealth.
They respect people without fearing them more than Allah.
They seek success while knowing Allah controls outcomes.
4. IT BUILDS GRATITUDE
A believer sees blessings differently.
Health, family, opportunities, and even simple moments become reminders of Allah’s mercy.
Instead of saying:
“I achieved everything by myself.”
The believer says:
“Allah blessed me with the ability and opportunity.”
WHY DO MUSLIMS CALL ALLAH BY DIFFERENT NAMES?
Allah has many beautiful names, each describing His perfection.
These names are not different gods.
They describe the same One Creator.
For example:
When a believer needs forgiveness, they remember Allah as Al-Ghafur (The Most Forgiving).
When facing difficulty, they remember Allah as Al-Wakeel (The Trustee).
When seeking mercy, they remember Allah as Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful).
Knowing Allah’s names helps Muslims build a deeper relationship with Him.
COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT ALLAH
“Muslims Worship a Different God”
Islam teaches that Allah is the Arabic word for God.
Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews also use the word Allah to refer to God.
The Islamic concept of Allah is the One Creator worshipped by the prophets.
“If Allah Is Merciful, Why Does He Punish?“
Islam teaches that Allah is both perfectly Merciful and perfectly Just.
His mercy does not mean ignoring wrongdoing.
His justice does not mean rejecting repentance.
Allah opens the door of forgiveness for those who sincerely return to Him.
“Why Can’t Muslims See Allah?”
Islam teaches that human beings in this life are limited.
Just as humans cannot see many things beyond their ability, seeing Allah is beyond our worldly capacity.
However, believers know Allah through His signs, revelation, and the relationship they build through worship.
HOW CAN WE STRENGTHEN OUR BELIEF IN ALLAH?
1. Reflect on Creation
Take time to observe the world around you.
The more a person reflects, the more they recognise the signs of Allah.
2. Learn the Qur’an
The Qur’an introduces humanity to Allah and teaches believers how to live.
3. Remember Allah Frequently
Dhikr keeps the heart connected to Allah.
Simple remembrance such as:
- SubhanAllah
- Alhamdulillah
- Allahu Akbar
- Astaghfirullah
strengthens faith.
4. Make Dua
Speaking to Allah through dua builds a personal relationship with Him.
A believer shares their hopes, fears, struggles, and gratitude with the One who knows them completely.
LESSONS WE CAN TAKE AWAY
Belief in Allah is not just a statement of faith.
It is a complete way of seeing life.
It changes how Muslims understand success, hardship, blessings, and purpose.
When a person knows Allah, they know where they came from, why they are here, and where they are returning.
CONCLUSION
The belief in Allah is the foundation upon which Islam is built.
It gives meaning to existence, peace to the heart, and direction to life.
A believer does not walk through the world believing they are alone or forgotten.
They know that behind every moment is the wisdom of Allah, the mercy of Allah, and the guidance of Allah.
The greatest journey a person can take is the journey of knowing their Creator.
May Allah increase our understanding of Him, strengthen our faith, and make us among those who worship Him with sincerity and love. Ameen.
