ISLAM EXPLAINED: WHAT IS TAQWA AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him]." — Qur'an 3:102

INTRODUCTION

Among the most repeated concepts in the Qur’an is Taqwa. It is a quality Allah commands believers to develop, a characteristic praised throughout revelation, and a measure by which people are judged in the sight of Allah.

But what exactly is Taqwa?

Many people translate Taqwa as “fear of Allah,” but its meaning goes much deeper. Taqwa is not simply being afraid of punishment. It is a conscious awareness of Allah that inspires a person to obey Him, avoid what displeases Him, and live with the understanding that Allah is always aware of their actions.

Taqwa is the heart of Islamic spirituality. It transforms worship from a routine into a meaningful relationship with Allah.

A person with Taqwa does not only ask, “What is allowed and what is forbidden?” They also ask, “What would bring me closer to Allah?”

WHAT DOES TAQWA MEAN?

The word Taqwa comes from the Arabic root wa-qa-ya (وَقَى), which carries meanings related to protection, guarding, and shielding oneself from harm.

In an Islamic context, Taqwa means protecting oneself from anything that distances the heart from Allah by following His commands and staying away from His prohibitions.

The famous companion, Umar ibn Al-Khattab رضي الله عنه, once asked Ubay ibn Ka’b رضي الله عنه about Taqwa.

Ubay responded by asking:

“Have you ever walked through a path filled with thorns?”

Umar replied, “Yes.”

Ubay asked, “What did you do?”

Umar said, “I gathered my clothes and carefully passed through.”

Ubay then explained that this is like Taqwa: being careful and conscious throughout the journey of life.

A person with Taqwa becomes mindful of their choices because they understand that every action matters.

TAQWA IS MORE THAN FEAR

When Muslims hear “fear Allah,” it should not be understood as the fear one has of a stranger or an enemy.

The fear of Allah is combined with:

  • Love for Allah
  • Hope in Allah’s mercy
  • Respect for Allah’s greatness
  • Awareness of Allah’s presence

A believer avoids sin not only because they fear punishment, but because they love Allah and do not want to displease Him.

A child who loves their parent avoids certain actions because they value that relationship. Similarly, a believer with Taqwa avoids wrongdoing because their heart is attached to Allah.

WHY DOES TAQWA MATTER?

1. TAQWA IS THE FOUNDATION OF TRUE SUCCESS

Allah repeatedly connects success with Taqwa.

Allah says:

“And fear Allah so that you may be successful.”
— Qur’an 2:189

Many people define success through wealth, status, fame, or achievements. Islam teaches that the greatest success is earning the pleasure of Allah.

A person may have little in worldly possessions but possess immense Taqwa, making them successful in the sight of their Creator.

2. TAQWA GUIDES OUR DECISIONS

Life constantly presents choices.

Sometimes the right decision is difficult. Sometimes nobody is watching. Sometimes doing the wrong thing appears easier.

This is where Taqwa becomes important.

A person with Taqwa remembers:

  • Allah sees what people do not see.
  • Allah knows what is hidden in the heart.
  • Every action has consequences.

Taqwa becomes an internal compass that guides a Muslim even when there is no external pressure.

3. TAQWA BRINGS ALLAH’S HELP

Every believer experiences difficulties.

There are moments of uncertainty, financial struggles, family challenges, and personal battles.

Allah promises support for those who maintain Taqwa.

Allah says:

“And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.”
— Qur’an 65:2-3

This does not mean a person with Taqwa will never face hardship. Rather, it means Allah provides guidance, strength, and solutions for those who remain conscious of Him.

4. TAQWA IMPROVES CHARACTER

A person cannot truly have Taqwa while ignoring how they treat others.

Taqwa appears in:

  • How we speak
  • How we treat our families
  • How we conduct business
  • How we respond when angry
  • How we behave when nobody is watching

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The most beloved of Allah’s servants to Allah are those with the best character.”

A heart connected to Allah produces good actions toward His creation.

5. TAQWA IS THE REAL MEASURE OF HONOUR

Islam does not measure a person’s worth by wealth, race, nationality, appearance, or social status.

Allah says:

“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.”
— Qur’an 49:13

The standard of honour in Islam is Taqwa.

A person’s value before Allah is determined by the condition of their heart and their obedience to Him.

HOW CAN A MUSLIM DEVELOP TAQWA?

Taqwa is not achieved overnight. It grows through consistent effort.

1. Strengthen Your Relationship With the Qur’an

The Qur’an guides believers toward Taqwa.

Regular reading, reflection, and implementation of its teachings help the heart become more conscious of Allah.

2. Maintain Your Prayers

Salah is one of the greatest ways to develop Taqwa.

Prayer repeatedly reminds a believer of Allah and protects the heart from becoming attached only to worldly matters.

3. Remember Allah Frequently

Dhikr keeps Allah present in the heart.

Simple acts such as saying:

  • SubhanAllah
  • Alhamdulillah
  • Allahu Akbar
  • Astaghfirullah

help strengthen spiritual awareness.

4. Be Careful With Small Sins

A person with Taqwa does not only avoid major sins. They are also cautious about actions that may slowly damage the heart.

The Prophet ﷺ warned believers not to underestimate small sins because they can accumulate.

5. Keep Good Company

The people around us influence our hearts.

Being around those who remind us of Allah encourages faith, good manners, and obedience.

SIGNS OF A PERSON WITH TAQWA

A person with Taqwa is not someone who never makes mistakes.

Human beings are imperfect.

Rather, a person with Taqwa is someone who:

  • Turns back to Allah after mistakes
  • Strives to improve
  • Avoids harming others
  • Worships Allah sincerely
  • Remembers Allah in private and public
  • Controls their desires for the sake of Allah
  • Shows humility

Taqwa is not perfection; it is constant movement toward Allah.

TAQWA IN DAILY LIFE

Taqwa is not limited to the mosque.

It appears in everyday situations:

A businessman with Taqwa refuses to cheat even when nobody would know.

A student with Taqwa avoids dishonesty even when cheating seems beneficial.

A spouse with Taqwa treats their partner with kindness even during disagreements.

A person with Taqwa controls their tongue because they know words have consequences.

Islam teaches that true spirituality must be visible through our actions.

LESSONS WE CAN TAKE AWAY

Taqwa is the heart of a believer’s journey.

It gives direction when life becomes confusing, strength when facing difficulties, and awareness that Allah is always near.

It is not simply about fearing Allah’s punishment; it is about living every moment with love, respect, and consciousness of Him.

The believer with Taqwa understands that every choice matters, every action is recorded, and every opportunity to please Allah is valuable.

CONCLUSION

Taqwa is one of the greatest treasures a Muslim can possess.

It is the quality that transforms ordinary actions into acts of worship and turns daily life into a journey toward Allah.

A person with Taqwa may not always be noticed by people, but they are never forgotten by Allah.

The question every believer should regularly ask is:

“Am I living my life in a way that brings me closer to Allah?”

That question is the beginning of Taqwa.

May Allah fill our hearts with sincere Taqwa, guide our actions, and make us among those who are beloved to Him. Ameen.
