COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID DURING UMRAH

Performing Umrah is one of the greatest acts of worship a Muslim can undertake. It is a journey filled with opportunities for forgiveness, spiritual renewal, and closeness to Allah. However, many pilgrims especially those travelling for the first time unknowingly make mistakes that can reduce the quality of their worship or cause unnecessary hardship.

Islam encourages us to seek knowledge before performing any act of worship. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever Allah intends good for, He gives him understanding of the religion.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

Learning about the common mistakes made during Umrah helps pilgrims perform their rites with confidence, sincerity, and in accordance with the Sunnah.

1. STARTING UMRAH WITHOUT LEARNING THE RITES

One of the biggest mistakes is travelling for Umrah without understanding how it should be performed.

Some pilgrims rely entirely on others to guide them, while others simply follow the crowd without knowing what they are doing.

Every Muslim intending to perform Umrah should learn:

  • The pillars of Umrah.
  • The obligations of Ihram.
  • The prohibitions while in Ihram.
  • The correct sequence of the rites.
  • The Sunnah practices that beautify the pilgrimage.

Knowledge removes confusion and allows a pilgrim to worship Allah with certainty.

2. NEGLECTING THE INTENTION

Umrah should be performed solely for the pleasure of Allah.

Unfortunately, some people become more concerned with taking photographs, making videos, or posting every moment on social media than focusing on worship.

While there is nothing wrong with keeping memories, a pilgrim should constantly renew their intention and remember why they travelled to Makkah.

The greatest achievement is not collecting beautiful pictures but earning Allah’s acceptance.

3. IGNORING THE RULES OF IHRAM

Some pilgrims unknowingly violate the rules of Ihram.

Examples include:

  • Applying perfume after entering Ihram.
  • Cutting hair or nails before completing Umrah.
  • Wearing prohibited clothing for men.
  • Using scented soaps or fragrances intentionally.
  • Engaging in unnecessary arguments or foul language.

Understanding the restrictions of Ihram before travelling helps avoid these mistakes.

4. PUSHING AND HARMING OTHERS

During Tawaf, many pilgrims become eager to reach the Black Stone or pray close to the Ka’bah.

In the process, some push, shove, or inconvenience fellow worshippers.

This goes against the spirit of Umrah.

Respecting the safety and dignity of other Muslims is more important than performing a recommended act in a harmful manner.

If reaching the Black Stone safely is not possible, simply point towards it and continue your Tawaf.

The Prophet ﷺ taught mercy, patience, and consideration for others.

5. BELIEVING THERE ARE SPECIFIC DU’AS FOR EVERY ROUND OF TAWAF

A common misconception is that every circuit of Tawaf has its own prescribed du’a.

There is no authentic evidence requiring a specific supplication for each round.

Pilgrims are free to:

  • Make personal du’a.
  • Recite the Qur’an.
  • Glorify Allah.
  • Seek forgiveness.
  • Send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.

Speak to Allah from your heart. There is no need to struggle with memorising lengthy supplications if you do not know them.

6. RUSHING THROUGH SA’I

Some pilgrims treat Sa’i as a task to complete as quickly as possible.

Instead of reflecting on the story of Hajar (AS), they hurry between Safa and Marwah without remembering Allah or making du’a.

Sa’i is an act of worship, not a race.

Take time to reflect on Hajar’s patience, perseverance, and complete trust in Allah.

7. WASTING TIME ON THE PHONE

Modern technology has made it easy to stay connected, but it can also become a distraction.

Some pilgrims spend valuable moments:

  • Browsing social media.
  • Replying to unnecessary messages.
  • Watching videos.
  • Taking excessive selfies.

Remember that your time in the Haram is precious.

There will always be time to check your phone later, but your opportunity to stand before the Ka’bah may not come again soon.

8. NEGLECTING GOOD CHARACTER

A pilgrim may perform every rite correctly but lose sight of good manners.

Crowded conditions can sometimes lead to impatience, anger, or harsh speech.

Yet Umrah is meant to refine character.

Smile.

Be patient.

Help elderly pilgrims.

Make space for others.

Forgive small inconveniences.

The way you treat fellow pilgrims is part of your worship.

9. MAKING UMRAH PHYSICALLY EXHAUSTING

Some pilgrims try to do everything in a very short period.

They perform multiple Umrahs every day, walk excessively without rest, and neglect their health.

While enthusiasm is commendable, Islam encourages balance.

A tired pilgrim who cannot concentrate in prayer may benefit more from resting, reading the Qur’an, making dhikr, or offering voluntary prayers in the Haram.

Quality of worship is more important than quantity alone.

10. RETURNING HOME WITHOUT CHANGING

Perhaps the greatest mistake is thinking that Umrah ends upon leaving Makkah.

The true purpose of Umrah is transformation.

If a pilgrim returns home only to resume old sins, neglect prayers, or abandon good habits, then the lessons of Umrah have not fully taken root.

A successful Umrah inspires lifelong obedience.

It encourages honesty.

It increases patience.

It strengthens faith.

It softens the heart.

The greatest souvenir from Makkah is not Zamzam or gifts for family—it is a heart that has become closer to Allah.

MAKE YOUR UMRAH COUNT

Every pilgrim hopes that Allah will accept their Umrah.

Acceptance is not measured by how many photographs were taken or how many times one performed Tawaf.

It is measured by sincerity, correct worship, and positive change after returning home.

Prepare before you travel.

Learn before you perform.

Be patient during the journey.

Remain humble throughout your stay.

And when you return, let the lessons of Umrah continue to shape your life every single day.

May Allah accept the Umrah of all pilgrims, forgive their shortcomings, and grant them an accepted and transformative journey.

Ameen.
