MURIC FILES NOTICE OF APPEAL, SEEKS STAY OF EXECUTION, WARNS AGAINST PREMATURE ENFORCEMENT OF ISI HIJAB DIRECTIVE
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, has expressed concern over a public notice issued by the Management of the International School, University of Ibadan (ISI), directing that, with effect from Monday, July 6, 2026, female students will no longer be permitted to wear the hijab with the school uniform, following the judgment of the Court of Appeal delivered on Friday, July 3, 2026.
While reaffirming its respect for the judiciary and commitment to the rule of law, MURIC disclosed that The Incorporated Trustees of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), on the same day the judgment was delivered, filed and served a Notice of Appeal against the decision, alongside a Motion for Stay of Execution/Injunction Pending Appeal before the appropriate court.
According to the organisation, the filing and service of these legal processes demonstrate that the litigation has not come to an end, as the issues surrounding the rights of Muslim female students to wear the hijab remain subject to further judicial determination.
MURIC argued that, in view of the pending application, it would be inappropriate and potentially prejudicial for the school management to immediately enforce the judgment by implementing a ban on the use of the hijab before the court has the opportunity to decide the Motion for Stay of Execution/Injunction.
The organisation maintained that the protection of fundamental rights and the preservation of peaceful coexistence are best achieved through strict adherence to due process and respect for ongoing judicial proceedings.
It therefore called on the Management of the International School, University of Ibadan to exercise restraint, uphold the rule of law, and refrain from taking any action capable of rendering the pending application nugatory or creating avoidable tension within the school community.
MURIC also appealed to Muslim parents, guardians, students, and the wider Muslim Ummah to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding throughout the legal process. It urged all concerned to avoid confrontation or any action capable of disrupting public peace, expressing confidence that the courts would give all parties a fair hearing in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Reaffirming its commitment to the lawful protection of the constitutional rights of Muslim students, MURIC assured Muslim parents and the general public that it would continue to pursue the matter through every legitimate legal avenue until justice is achieved.
The organisation concluded by praying that Allah grants justice, protects the children involved, and continues to strengthen unity and peace in Nigeria.
