MURIC DISTANCES ITSELF FROM AMURIC-FULANI GROUP STATEMENT, CALLS FOR CLEARER IDENTITY
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, has clarified that it was not involved in a recent statement jointly issued by the Amalgamated Muslim Rights Concern (AMURIC) and a Fulani group, stressing that the two organisations are separate entities despite the similarity in their names.
In a press statement dated June 6, 2026, MURIC explained that the statement released on Friday, June 5, 2026, originated from AMURIC and not from MURIC.
The organisation noted that the similarity between the two names has created confusion among members of the public and stakeholders who may mistakenly attribute statements issued by AMURIC to MURIC.
While describing AMURIC as a sister Islamic organisation comprising respected Muslim brothers and sisters, MURIC advised its leadership to consider adopting a more distinct name to avoid future misunderstandings.
According to the statement, MURIC has operated under its current name since its establishment in 1994 and was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) under that name.
MURIC also emphasized that it holds a different position from the one expressed in AMURIC’s statement. The group specifically stated that it did not see the need to involve prominent Yoruba figures such as Chief Sunday Igboho, former Ekiti State Governor Chief Ayodele Fayose, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in the discussion.
The organisation reaffirmed its belief that Yoruba communities, like every other ethnic group in Nigeria, have the legitimate right to protect themselves against banditry and terrorism within the framework of the law.
MURIC further expressed support for the efforts of security agencies and recognised local vigilante groups such as Amotekun, the Oduduwa People’s Congress (OPC), and Iru Ekun in tackling security challenges across Yorubaland.
The group concluded by reiterating that it had no knowledge of, nor involvement in, the statement jointly issued by AMURIC and the Fulani group, urging the public to distinguish clearly between the two organisations.
