THE TAKBEER OF EID: THE POWERFUL WORDS THAT FILL THE DAYS OF DHUL HIJJAH
As Eid al-Adha draws near, one of the most beautiful sounds heard in homes, mosques and communities is the Takbeer:
“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahil-hamd.”
For many people, these words simply signal that Eid is approaching. But the Takbeer of Dhul Hijjah carries a much deeper meaning. It is not merely a phrase repeated by the tongue; it is a declaration of faith, gratitude and complete recognition of Allah’s greatness.
“Allahu Akbar” means Allah is greater. Greater than our worries, greater than our fears, greater than our ambitions, greater than our possessions and greater than anything occupying our hearts.
During these sacred days, Muslims are encouraged to increase the remembrance of Allah through Takbeer, Tahmeed and Tahleel. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ understood the value of these days and would raise their voices with remembrance, causing markets and gatherings to become filled with the glorification of Allah.
The Takbeer also connects directly with the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). After Allah saved his son and replaced him with a sacrifice, gratitude and obedience became central lessons for believers. The remembrance of Allah became attached to these blessed days.
Unfortunately, many Muslims prepare extensively for food, clothing and celebrations while neglecting one of the easiest acts of worship available to them. The Takbeer requires no wealth, no special place and no complicated preparation.
It can be recited while driving, cooking, working, walking or sitting at home.
These words also train the heart. A person who repeatedly says “Allahu Akbar” should gradually begin to live by it. If Allah is truly greater, then His commands become greater than desires, His pleasure becomes greater than worldly approval and obedience becomes greater than temptation.
As Eid approaches and excitement grows, let our homes be filled not only with discussions about celebrations but also with remembrance of Allah.
May Allah make our tongues active in His remembrance, accept our worship and allow the words “Allahu Akbar” to live not only on our lips but also within our hearts. Ameen.
