WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY OF ARAFAH

The Day of Arafat is the greatest day of Hajj and one of the most sacred days in the entire Islamic calendar. For pilgrims, it is the emotional and spiritual climax of the journey. For Muslims around the world who are not performing Hajj, it is also a day of fasting, du’a, repentance, and immense mercy.

Many scholars describe it as the day of forgiveness, the day of tears, and the day hearts return to Allah.

What Is the Day of Arafah?

The Day of Arafah is the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah. On this day, pilgrims gather in the plain of Arafat after leaving Mina.

Standing in Arafat is the central pillar of Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Hajj is Arafah, showing its critical importance.

Without being present in Arafat at the prescribed time, Hajj is not valid.

What Is Arafat?

Arafat is the vast plain outside Makkah where millions of pilgrims gather in humble clothing, calling upon Allah as equals.

It is a scene unlike any other on earth:

* Rich and poor side by side
* Every race and language together
* Leaders and laborers alike
* All wearing simple garments
* All in need of Allah’s mercy

What Happens on the Day?

1. Pilgrims Travel to Arafat

After spending the night in Mina, pilgrims proceed to Arafat.

2. They Remain There in Worship

From the relevant time window on that day until sunset, pilgrims remain in Arafat engaged in du’a, dhikr, Qur’an, repentance, reflection, and prayer.

3. Combined Prayers

Dhuhr and Asr are commonly prayed in combined shortened form according to Hajj practice.

4. Deep Personal Supplication

This is the day many pilgrims cry, ask forgiveness, seek healing, ask for family guidance, and beg Allah for acceptance.

5. Departure After Sunset

After sunset, pilgrims leave peacefully for Muzdalifah.

Why Is It So Powerful?

1. Day of Mercy

Many narrations mention Allah’s mercy and forgiveness on this day.

The sight of millions gathered in white resembles the gathering on the Day of Judgment.

3. Chance for a New Beginning

Many pilgrims return spiritually transformed.
