UMRAH RITES FOR BEGINNERS: A COMPLETE STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE FOR FIRST-TIMERS
Embarking on Umrah is one of the most beautiful journeys a Muslim can experience. For someone going for the first time, it can feel overwhelming not because it is difficult, but because you want to get it right. This guide breaks everything down in a simple, clear, and practical way so you can perform your Umrah with confidence and peace of mind.
WHAT IS UMRAH?
Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. Unlike Hajj, it is not compulsory, but it carries immense reward. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that one Umrah to another is an expiation for the sins between them.
Before you even begin the rites, your intention (niyyah) must be purely for the sake of Allah.
PREPARATION BEFORE UMRAH
Before entering into the rites, proper preparation is essential.
You should:
Learn the basic steps of Umrah
Trim your nails and remove unwanted hair
Perform ghusl (full purification bath)
Wear your Ihram (for men: two white unstitched cloths; for women: modest normal clothing)
Avoid perfume after entering Ihram
SPIRITUAL TIP: Start increasing your dhikr, istighfar, and sending salawat upon the Prophet before your journey. It prepares your heart.
ENTERING IHRAM AND MAKING INTENTION
Ihram is not just clothing it is a sacred state.
At the Miqat (designated boundary), you make your intention for Umrah and begin reciting the Talbiyah:
“Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal mulk, la sharika lak.”
Meaning: Here I am, O Allah, here I am. You have no partner. Truly all praise, blessings, and sovereignty belong to You.
Continue reciting the Talbiyah frequently until you begin Tawaf.
IMPORTANT RESTRICTIONS IN IHRAM
While in Ihram, you must avoid:
Cutting hair or nails
Using perfume
Engaging in marital relations
Hunting animals
Arguing or using foul language
Men must not cover their head, and they should not wear stitched clothing.
ARRIVING IN MAKKAH
When you arrive in Makkah, proceed to the Masjid al-Haram with humility and awe. Enter with your right foot and make dua.
Seeing the Kaaba for the first time is a powerful moment take your time and make sincere supplications.
TAWAF (CIRCLING THE KAABA)
Tawaf is the first major rite of Umrah.
You will circle the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction.
Start at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad):
If possible, touch or kiss it. If not, point towards it and say “Allahu Akbar.”
Each circuit begins and ends at the Black Stone.
During Tawaf:
Men should uncover their right shoulder (Idtiba)
Men should walk briskly in the first three rounds (Raml), if possible
Make dua, dhikr, or recite Qur’an
There are no fixed duas speak to Allah from your heart.
After completing seven rounds, cover your shoulder again.
PRAYING AFTER TAWAF
Pray two units (rak’ah) behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, or anywhere in the mosque.
Then drink Zamzam water and make dua.
SA’I BETWEEN SAFA AND MARWAH
Sa’i commemorates the struggle of Hajar (AS).
You will walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times.
Start at Safa:
Face the Kaaba, raise your hands, and make dua.
Walk towards Marwah:
Men should jog between the green markers
Women walk normally
One trip from Safa to Marwah is one round. Marwah to Safa is another.
Repeat until you complete seven rounds, ending at Marwah.
Use this time for heartfelt dua this is a powerful moment of connection.
SHAVING OR TRIMMING THE HAIR
This is the final step of Umrah.
Men:
Shave the head completely (best), or trim evenly
Women:
Cut a small portion of hair (about a fingertip length)
Once this is done, you exit the state of Ihram.
Your Umrah is now complete.
COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
Rushing through the rites without understanding
Thinking there are fixed duas for each step
Neglecting sincerity and focus
Engaging in arguments or distractions
Forgetting that this is an act of worship, not just a ritual
FINAL ADVICE FOR FIRST-TIMERS
Take things calmly. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear.
Focus on:
Sincerity over perfection
Presence over speed
Connection over routine
Make plenty of dua for yourself, your family, and the Ummah.
And remember this journey is not just about completing Umrah, but about returning as a better Muslim.
