WHY DO MUSLIMS USE THE RIGHT HAND FOR EATING, DRINKING AND OTHER GOOD ACTIONS?
If you observe Muslims during meals, you will notice that most of them eat and drink with their right hand. The same hand is often used when giving charity, shaking hands, receiving gifts and performing other honourable actions.
This practice is not based on culture or tradition. It is a Sunnah taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and has been followed by Muslims for over 1,400 years.
WHAT DID THE PROPHET ﷺ TEACH?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged Muslims to use the right hand when eating and drinking.
On one occasion, he advised a young boy by saying:
“Mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you.”
This simple instruction became one of the first lessons many Muslim children learn about table manners.
The Prophet ﷺ also encouraged the use of the right hand for other honourable acts, making it a consistent part of a Muslim’s daily life.
WHY IS THE RIGHT HAND GIVEN SPECIAL PREFERENCE?
Islam distinguishes between actions that are honourable and those that involve cleaning or removing impurities.
As a general rule:
- The right hand is used for eating, drinking, greeting people, giving and receiving items, wearing clothes and other noble actions.
- The left hand is reserved for personal hygiene and cleaning after using the toilet.
This distinction helps maintain cleanliness and good manners in everyday life.
IS THIS PRACTICE ONLY ABOUT FOOD?
No.
The Sunnah encourages Muslims to begin many good actions with the right side whenever appropriate.
For example, the Prophet ﷺ preferred using the right side when:
- Putting on shoes.
- Wearing clothes.
- Entering the mosque.
- Combing his hair.
- Performing Wudu by washing the right limbs before the left.
These actions demonstrate that Islam pays attention even to the smallest details of daily life.
WHAT IF SOMEONE IS LEFT-HANDED?
Islam recognises that some people naturally write or perform certain tasks with their left hand.
There is no prohibition against writing, carrying objects or working with the left hand.
The Sunnah specifically relates to certain acts, such as eating and drinking, where Muslims are encouraged to use the right hand whenever they are physically able.
If someone has an injury, disability or medical condition that prevents them from using their right hand, there is no blame upon them.
Islam does not impose hardship beyond a person’s ability.
DOES THIS HAVE A SPIRITUAL PURPOSE?
Yes.
Using the right hand is an act of following the example of the Prophet ﷺ.
Many actions in Islam may appear small, but when performed with the intention of following the Sunnah, they become acts of worship.
This teaches Muslims that obedience to Allah is not limited to the mosque. Even ordinary habits can become opportunities to earn reward.
A LESSON IN DISCIPLINE
One of the remarkable features of Islam is that it provides guidance for both major acts of worship and everyday habits.
Using the right hand reminds Muslims that faith is reflected not only in prayer and fasting but also in manners, cleanliness and personal discipline.
These small habits help shape a believer’s character over time.
A SIMPLE SUNNAH WITH LASTING VALUE
To someone unfamiliar with Islam, using the right hand may seem like a minor custom. However, for Muslims, it is a daily reminder to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in both great and small matters.
The next time you see a Muslim eating with their right hand, remember that they are not simply following a cultural practice. They are reviving a Sunnah that has been passed down from the Prophet ﷺ and turning an ordinary daily action into an act of obedience to Allah.
