WHY DO MUSLIMS SAY “BISMILLAH” BEFORE EATING?

One of the first things Muslim children are taught is to say “Bismillah” before eating. Whether it is a simple breakfast at home or a large family gathering, many Muslims begin their meal with these words.

But why is this phrase so important, and what does it actually mean?

WHAT DOES “BISMILLAH” MEAN?

“Bismillah” is an Arabic phrase that means “In the Name of Allah.”

By saying it before eating, a Muslim begins the meal by remembering Allah, acknowledging that all food and provision ultimately come from Him.

It is a simple expression of gratitude before taking the first bite.

WHAT DID THE PROPHET ﷺ TEACH?

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Muslims to begin their meals by mentioning the name of Allah.

He also advised children and adults to observe good manners while eating. On one occasion, he corrected a young boy by saying:

“Young boy, mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you.”

This hadith has become one of the earliest lessons Muslim parents teach their children at the dining table.

WHAT IF SOMEONE FORGETS?

It is common for people to become distracted and forget to say “Bismillah” before starting a meal.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that if a person remembers during the meal, they should say:

“Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu”

This means:

“In the name of Allah at its beginning and at its end.”

This allows the person to remember Allah even if they forgot at the start.

WHY IS REMEMBERING ALLAH BEFORE EATING IMPORTANT?

Islam teaches that eating is not merely a physical activity. It is also an opportunity to worship Allah.

When a Muslim begins with “Bismillah”, they turn an everyday habit into an act of worship.

This reflects one of the unique features of Islam: ordinary daily activities can become acts of devotion when they are done with the right intention and according to the Sunnah.

IS SAYING “BISMILLAH” ONLY FOR FOOD?

No.

Muslims are encouraged to say “Bismillah” before many daily activities, including:

  • Beginning a journey.
  • Entering the home.
  • Performing Wudu.
  • Slaughtering animals for food.
  • Starting important tasks.

Beginning with the name of Allah reminds believers to seek His blessings and guidance in everything they do.

GRATITUDE BEGINS BEFORE THE FIRST BITE

Many people remember to thank Allah after eating, but Islam also teaches gratitude before the meal begins.

Every meal is a blessing that many people around the world do not have.

By saying “Bismillah,” Muslims recognise that food is not something to be taken for granted. It is a gift from Allah that deserves appreciation.

A SMALL PHRASE WITH A BIG IMPACT

The words “Bismillah” take only a second to say, yet they teach lifelong values.

They remind Muslims to be grateful, to remember Allah in everyday life, and to recognise that every blessing ultimately comes from Him.

The next time you sit down to eat, remember that saying “Bismillah” is more than a tradition. It is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that transforms a daily necessity into an act of remembrance and gratitude.
