WHY DO MUSLIMS FAST ON MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS?
When people think about fasting in Islam, they usually think of the month of Ramadan. However, many Muslims voluntarily fast throughout the year, especially on Mondays and Thursdays.
This practice was regularly observed by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and remains one of the most beloved voluntary acts of worship. But why did he choose these two days?
A SUNNAH OF THE PROPHET ﷺ
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ frequently fasted on Mondays and Thursdays.
When he was asked about this practice, he explained that people’s deeds are presented to Allah on these two days, and he loved that his deeds should be presented while he was fasting.
This teaches Muslims that fasting is not limited to Ramadan. It is also a means of drawing closer to Allah throughout the year.
WHY DID THE PROPHET ﷺ FAST ON MONDAY?
Monday holds another special significance in the life of the Prophet ﷺ.
When he was asked why he fasted on Mondays, he replied:
“That is the day I was born, the day I received revelation, and the day revelation came to me.”
Rather than celebrating his birthday with annual festivities, the Prophet ﷺ expressed gratitude to Allah through an act of worship.
This is one of the reasons many scholars point to when discussing the virtue of fasting on Mondays.
WHY THURSDAY?
Thursday is paired with Monday because both days are mentioned in authentic hadith as the days when the deeds of people are presented to Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ wanted to be in a state of worship during that presentation.
His example teaches Muslims to think about the quality of their deeds and to seize regular opportunities for spiritual renewal.
IS FASTING ON THESE DAYS OBLIGATORY?
No.
Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is voluntary.
A Muslim who fasts on these days hopes for reward from Allah, but there is no sin upon someone who does not.
Islam encourages voluntary acts of worship without making them burdensome.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Besides the spiritual reward, fasting on Mondays and Thursdays helps Muslims develop habits that extend beyond Ramadan.
It encourages:
- Self-discipline.
- Gratitude for Allah’s blessings.
- Patience and self-control.
- Regular remembrance of Allah.
- Consistency in worship throughout the year.
These qualities strengthen a believer’s relationship with Allah and help maintain the spiritual momentum gained during Ramadan.
CAN YOU FAST ONLY MONDAY OR ONLY THURSDAY?
Yes.
Although the Prophet ﷺ often fasted both days, a Muslim may fast only Monday or only Thursday if that is easier.
The important thing is sincerity and consistency.
Even occasional voluntary fasting is better than abandoning the Sunnah altogether.
A WEEKLY OPPORTUNITY TO GROW
Many people wait for Ramadan before increasing their worship.
The Sunnah of fasting on Mondays and Thursdays reminds Muslims that every week offers fresh opportunities to earn Allah’s pleasure.
These two days become moments to pause, reflect on one’s actions, increase in worship and seek forgiveness.
The next time Monday or Thursday arrives, remember that it is more than another day on the calendar. It is an opportunity to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, purify the soul through voluntary fasting and strive to have your deeds presented to Allah while you are engaged in an act of devotion.
