SA’I: WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF HAJAR (AS)

Among the rites of Umrah, Sa’i is one of the most inspiring acts of worship. Pilgrims walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, retracing the steps of one of the greatest women in Islamic history Hajar (AS), the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and the mother of Prophet Isma’il (AS).
At first glance, Sa’i may appear to be a simple walk. But in reality, it is a powerful reminder of faith, perseverance, sacrifice, and complete trust in Allah. Every step taken between Safa and Marwah commemorates a story that has inspired believers for thousands of years.
THE STORY BEHIND SA’I
The origin of Sa’i begins with a remarkable test of faith.
By Allah’s command, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) left Hajar (AS) and their infant son, Isma’il (AS), in the barren valley of Makkah. At that time, there was no city, no vegetation, and no visible source of water.
As Prophet Ibrahim (AS) prepared to leave, Hajar (AS) asked him:
“Has Allah commanded you to do this?”
When he replied, “Yes,” she responded with unwavering faith:
“Then Allah will not abandon us.”
Those words reflect complete trust in Allah, even when the situation seemed impossible.
A MOTHER’S DESPERATE SEARCH
As time passed, their supply of water ran out. The cries of baby Isma’il (AS) grew louder, and Hajar (AS) could not bear to watch her child suffer from thirst.
She did not sit down in despair.
She did not complain.
She did not lose hope.
Instead, she climbed the hill of Safa, searching for anyone who might help. Seeing no one, she hurried to Marwah. Again, she found nothing.
She repeated this journey seven times, running with determination between the two hills.
Her actions teach a timeless lesson: trust in Allah does not mean remaining idle. A believer must make every lawful effort while relying completely on Allah.
ALLAH REWARDED HER EFFORT
After Hajar (AS) completed her search, Allah sent Angel Jibril (AS), who struck the ground, and the blessed well of Zamzam began to flow beside baby Isma’il (AS).
That miraculous water continues to benefit millions of pilgrims every year.
The lesson is profound.
Allah could have caused Zamzam to appear without Hajar’s effort. Instead, He chose to honour her struggle first.
This teaches us that while success comes only from Allah, we are expected to strive before expecting His help.
SA’I TEACHES US TO NEVER GIVE UP
Every believer faces moments of uncertainty.
There are times when we search for employment, seek healing from illness, pray for children, ask Allah to remove financial hardship, or hope for guidance in difficult decisions.
Like Hajar (AS), we may not see immediate answers.
Sa’i reminds us that perseverance is part of worship.
Even when the answer seems delayed, Allah is never unaware of our efforts.
The believer continues striving while trusting that Allah’s timing is always perfect.
TRUST MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY ACTION
One of the greatest lessons of Sa’i is the balance between reliance upon Allah (tawakkul) and personal effort.
Hajar (AS) had complete faith that Allah would protect her and her son.
Yet she still ran between Safa and Marwah.
She searched.
She struggled.
She exerted herself.
This teaches Muslims that making du’a alone is not enough if we neglect the means that Allah has placed before us.
A student must study.
A business owner must work honestly.
A patient must seek treatment.
A pilgrim must prepare properly for Umrah.
Reliance upon Allah is strengthened—not weakened—by sincere effort.
THE HONOUR OF A RIGHTEOUS WOMAN
Sa’i also highlights the honoured position of righteous women in Islam.
Allah immortalised the actions of Hajar (AS) by making them a permanent part of Hajj and Umrah.
Every year, millions of Muslims retrace her footsteps.
This is an extraordinary honour.
It reminds us that greatness in Islam is measured by faith and obedience, not by gender, wealth, or social status.
Hajar (AS) was not a queen or a ruler. She was a believing servant of Allah whose patience and trust became an example for all generations.
EVERY STEP IS AN ACT OF WORSHIP
During Sa’i, pilgrims are encouraged to remember Allah, make du’a, and reflect upon the story of Hajar (AS).
The distance between Safa and Marwah is not merely a physical path.
It is a path of hope.
A path of perseverance.
A path of unwavering faith.
Every step reminds the believer that Allah sees every effort, even when no one else does.
BRING THE LESSONS OF SA’I HOME
Completing Sa’i should change the way we face life’s challenges.
When difficulties arise:
Do not lose hope.
Do not abandon your prayers.
Do not stop making du’a.
Do not give up after one attempt.
Keep striving while trusting Allah.
Just as Hajar (AS) never imagined that Zamzam would emerge beneath the feet of her child, we too may find that Allah’s solution comes from a place we never expected.
Allah says:
“And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He is sufficient for them.”
(Qur’an 65:3)
Sa’i is therefore much more than walking between two hills. It is a reminder that every believer’s life is a journey of effort, patience, hope, and complete reliance upon Allah.
Those who walk in the footsteps of Hajar (AS) should also strive to carry her faith, resilience, and trust into their daily lives.
