DON’T WASTE YOUR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
After a demanding week, many people look forward to the weekend as a time to relax. There is nothing wrong with resting, spending time with loved ones, or enjoying halal recreation. In fact, Islam encourages balance and reminds us that our bodies and minds have rights over us.
However, there is a difference between resting and wasting time.
Many weekends disappear without us accomplishing anything meaningful. Hours are spent scrolling through social media, watching endless videos, or engaging in activities that leave us neither refreshed nor spiritually enriched. Before we know it, Monday arrives, and we wonder where the time went.
As Muslims, we should remember that time is one of Allah’s greatest blessings. Every hour we are given is an opportunity to earn reward, improve ourselves, and benefit others.
This does not mean every minute must be spent in formal acts of worship. Rather, it means being intentional with our time.
Use part of your weekend to reconnect with the Qur’an. Read a few pages with reflection, revise what you have memorised, or listen to a beneficial lecture that increases your understanding of Islam.
Spend quality time with your family. Share a meal, talk without distractions, play with your children, or visit your parents and relatives. Strong relationships are built through time and attention.
Look for opportunities to do good. Visit someone who is sick, help a neighbour, support a charitable cause, or encourage someone who is struggling. Simple acts of kindness often have a lasting impact.
Take care of your physical health as well. Go for a walk, exercise, or engage in a healthy activity that refreshes your body. A strong believer is better able to fulfil their responsibilities and serve others.
The weekend is also an ideal time to learn something new. Read a beneficial book, develop a useful skill, or improve your knowledge in an area that will help you in your career, business, or deen. Lifelong learning is a habit that benefits both this life and the Hereafter.
Most importantly, do not neglect your prayers. No matter how relaxed your schedule becomes, let the five daily prayers remain the foundation of your day. They are the anchor that keeps us connected to Allah regardless of how busy or how free we are.
Before the weekend comes to an end, ask yourself a simple question: Did these two days bring me closer to Allah, my family, and my personal goals, or did they simply pass without purpose?
A meaningful weekend is not one packed with endless activities. It is one where rest, worship, family, learning, and service to others are all given their proper place.
May Allah bless our time, protect us from wasting our lives in what does not benefit us, and help us use every weekend as an opportunity to grow in faith, character, and gratitude. Ameen.
