ARE YOU PREPARING FOR UMRAH OR JUST PREPARING TO TRAVEL?

As the August Umrah season approaches, many Muslims are making arrangements for their journey to the sacred cities of Makkah and Madinah. Flight tickets are being booked, hotels are being confirmed, passports are being checked, and luggage lists are being prepared.

All of these preparations are necessary. However, every intending pilgrim should ask an important question before leaving home:

Am I preparing for Umrah, or am I simply preparing to travel?

There is a significant difference between the two.

Travelling can be planned with money, documents, and luggage. Umrah, however, requires something much deeper. It is an act of worship, and like every act of worship in Islam, it begins with sincerity and preparation of the heart.

Many people spend weeks deciding what clothes to pack but spend very little time preparing themselves spiritually. They think about what they will wear in Makkah but forget to think about the condition of their hearts when they stand before the Ka’bah.

Preparing for Umrah begins with renewing one’s intention.

The purpose of the journey should be to seek the pleasure of Allah, to worship Him sincerely, and to draw closer to Him. If a person travels mainly for photographs, shopping, or recognition from others, they risk missing the true purpose of the pilgrimage.

Another important part of preparation is repentance.

Before leaving for Umrah, a Muslim should sincerely seek Allah’s forgiveness for past sins. Every pilgrim hopes to return from Umrah spiritually purified, and that journey should begin with sincere tawbah before boarding the aircraft.

It is also important to resolve outstanding issues with other people.

If you have wronged someone, apologise.

If you owe someone money, make arrangements to repay it.

If there are broken family relationships, make an effort to reconcile them.

Acts of worship become more meaningful when a believer strives to fulfil both the rights of Allah and the rights of His creation.

Preparing for Umrah also requires learning.

Unfortunately, some pilgrims arrive in Makkah without understanding the rites of Umrah. They depend entirely on guides or simply imitate others without knowing what they are doing.

Every intending pilgrim should take time to study the steps of Umrah, learn the relevant supplications, understand the significance of each ritual, and become familiar with the etiquettes of visiting the Haram.

Physical preparation should not be neglected either.

Umrah involves considerable walking, especially during Tawaf and Sa’i. Pilgrims who improve their physical fitness before travelling often find it easier to complete the rituals comfortably and focus on their worship instead of physical exhaustion.

Financial preparation is equally important.

A Muslim should ensure that the money used for Umrah comes from lawful earnings. They should also budget wisely for the journey without neglecting their responsibilities to their family or leaving unpaid debts behind.

One common mistake is focusing so much on shopping that worship becomes secondary.

While buying gifts for loved ones is permissible, it should never take precedence over prayers in the Haram, recitation of the Qur’an, remembrance of Allah, and making dua.

Time in Makkah and Madinah is precious and cannot be replaced once the journey is over.

Another aspect of preparation is managing expectations.

The holy cities receive millions of visitors every year. Crowds, delays, long walks, and moments of inconvenience are part of the experience. A pilgrim who prepares mentally for these challenges is more likely to remain patient and focused on worship.

Ultimately, Umrah is not measured by the number of photographs taken, the amount of shopping completed, or the luxury of one’s accommodation.

Its true value lies in sincerity, humility, obedience to Allah, and the positive change it brings to a person’s life.

As you prepare for the August Umrah season, make sure your passport is valid, your luggage is packed, and your travel documents are complete.

More importantly, prepare your heart.

A well-packed suitcase may get you to Makkah, but only a sincere heart will help you make the most of your Umrah.
