BEFORE THE WEEK ENDS, TAKE ACCOUNT OF YOURSELF
As the weekend unfolds, many of us begin thinking about the week ahead—our work, studies, business, and responsibilities. But before turning the page to a new week, there is one question every Muslim should ask:
How did I spend the week that has just passed?
Islam encourages believers to reflect on their actions and hold themselves accountable before they are held accountable by Allah on the Day of Judgment. A few moments of honest self-evaluation can help us recognise our strengths, correct our mistakes, and become better servants of Allah.
Begin with your relationship with Allah.
Did you observe your five daily prayers on time?
Did you remember Allah throughout the day?
Did you recite and reflect on the Qur’an?
Did you make sincere du’a and seek His forgiveness?
No one is perfect, but every believer should strive to improve from one week to the next.
Next, think about your dealings with people.
Were you honest in your business and work?
Did you fulfil your promises?
Did you treat your parents with kindness?
Were you patient with your spouse, children, colleagues, and neighbours?
Did your words bring peace, or did they hurt someone?
Good character is one of the greatest signs of true faith, and every interaction is an opportunity to earn reward.
It is also important to reflect on how you spent your time.
How many hours were spent on beneficial activities?
How much time disappeared scrolling through social media or watching things that added little value to your life?
Time is one of Allah’s greatest blessings, and once it passes, it can never be recovered.
If you realise you have made mistakes during the week, do not lose hope. Allah’s mercy is greater than our shortcomings. Turn to Him with sincere repentance, ask for His forgiveness, and make a firm intention to do better in the coming week.
Likewise, if Allah enabled you to perform good deeds, thank Him. Every act of worship is a blessing from Him, and gratitude is one of the keys to receiving even more blessings.
Before Monday arrives, set one or two realistic goals for yourself. Perhaps you will be more punctual with your prayers, dedicate time each day to the Qur’an, control your temper, give charity, or increase your remembrance of Allah. Small, consistent improvements are more sustainable than ambitious plans that quickly fade.
A believer is always growing. Every new week is another opportunity to draw closer to Allah, strengthen one’s character, and increase in good deeds.
Do not allow one week to end exactly as it began. Let every passing week leave you stronger in faith, wiser in your choices, and more conscious of your purpose in life.
May Allah forgive our shortcomings, accept our good deeds, guide us to what pleases Him, and grant us the ability to make every new week better than the last. Ameen.
