MUHARRAM: THE SACRED MONTH MANY MUSLIMS OVERLOOK

Every year, Muslims eagerly anticipate the arrival of Ramadan. Mosques become full, acts of worship increase, and believers strive to maximize every opportunity for reward. Yet there is another blessed month that often arrives quietly and passes with little attention from many Muslims: Muharram.

As the first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram is not merely the beginning of a new year. It is one of the four sacred months chosen by Allah and carries virtues that make it one of the most important periods in the Islamic year.

Unfortunately, many Muslims know very little about the special status of Muharram and the opportunities it presents for spiritual growth.

ONE OF THE SACRED MONTHS

Allah mentions in the Qur’an that there are twelve months in a year and that four of them are sacred.

Muharram is among these four sacred months.

The sacred months occupy a special position in Islam because acts of obedience performed during them carry great significance, while sins committed during them are particularly serious.

This sacred status should encourage Muslims to increase their worship and exercise greater care in avoiding wrongdoing.

Yet many people allow Muharram to pass without making any meaningful effort to take advantage of its blessings.

THE MONTH OF ALLAH

Muharram possesses a unique distinction among the months of the Islamic calendar.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ referred to it as “the Month of Allah.”

This special description highlights its virtue and importance.

When Allah honours something by associating it with Himself, it indicates a special rank and status.

For believers, this should be enough reason to pay closer attention to Muharram and seek opportunities for worship throughout the month.

THE BEST VOLUNTARY FASTING AFTER RAMADAN

One of the greatest virtues of Muharram is its connection to fasting.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that the best fasting after the obligatory fasts of Ramadan is fasting during Muharram.

This statement alone demonstrates the enormous value of the month.

Many Muslims search for ways to increase their good deeds throughout the year. Muharram provides a simple yet powerful opportunity to do so through voluntary fasting.

Whether through fasting Ashura, the white days, Mondays and Thursdays, or additional days throughout the month, believers can earn tremendous rewards.

THE BLESSED DAY OF ASHURA

When Muharram is mentioned, the Day of Ashura naturally comes to mind.

Observed on the tenth day of the month, Ashura is one of the most virtuous days of the Islamic year.

It commemorates the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh.

The Prophet ﷺ fasted on this day and encouraged Muslims to do the same.

He also informed believers that fasting on Ashura serves as a means of expiating the sins of the previous year.

Such a reward should motivate every Muslim to take this day seriously and prepare for it properly.

A TIME FOR SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

The beginning of a new Islamic year offers a natural opportunity for self-reflection.

Many people make plans for their careers, businesses, finances, and personal development. However, Muslims should also assess their spiritual condition.

Muharram invites believers to ask important questions.

How consistent have I been with my prayers?

How strong is my relationship with the Qur’an?

Have I improved my character over the past year?

What sins do I need to leave behind?

What good deeds should I increase?

By honestly answering these questions, Muslims can use Muharram as a starting point for meaningful change.

LEARNING FROM THE HIJRAH

Although the Hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ did not occur during Muharram itself, the Islamic calendar begins from that historic migration.

The Hijrah was a turning point in Islamic history.

It teaches lessons of sacrifice, patience, planning, courage, and trust in Allah.

Every new Hijri year reminds Muslims that positive change often requires effort and commitment.

Just as the Prophet ﷺ and his companions left behind difficulties for a better future, believers should strive to leave behind bad habits and move toward greater obedience to Allah.

COMMONLY MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

Many Muslims limit their focus in Muharram to a single day of fasting.

While Ashura is undoubtedly important, the entire month offers opportunities for worship.

Increasing Qur’an recitation, giving charity, making du’a, maintaining family ties, seeking forgiveness, and engaging in dhikr are all excellent ways to benefit from the sacred nature of the month.

Muharram should not be treated as simply another month on the calendar.

It should be viewed as a spiritual season filled with opportunities to earn Allah’s pleasure.

CONCLUSION

Muharram is one of the most blessed yet frequently overlooked months in the Islamic calendar. As one of Allah’s sacred months, it offers believers a chance to increase their worship, seek forgiveness, and begin the new Islamic year with purpose and devotion.

Rather than allowing Muharram to pass unnoticed, Muslims should strive to make the most of its unique virtues. Through fasting, repentance, reflection, and righteous deeds, believers can transform the month into a source of lasting spiritual benefit.

May Allah allow us to recognize the value of Muharram, benefit from its blessings, and make this new Islamic year one of faith, growth, and acceptance. Ameen.
