SPIRITUAL DIGEST: RAMADAN DAY 18, THE FAITH OF THOSE WHO FOLLOW THE MESSAGE
“Rabbanaa aamannaa bimaa anzalta wattaba‘nar-rasuula faktubnaa ma‘ash-shaahideen.”
“Our Lord! We believe in what You have revealed and we follow the Messenger, so write us among those who bear witness.” (3:53)
This powerful supplication appears in the story of the sincere followers of Prophet ‘Isa (Jesus). When they recognized the truth of the divine message, they openly declared their belief and pledged their loyalty to the Messenger of Allah. Their response reflects the true meaning of faith: belief that is accompanied by commitment and action.
In the Qur’an, faith is never described as a mere statement on the tongue. Rather, it is belief in the heart, affirmation on the tongue, and actions that reflect that belief. The companions of the prophets understood this deeply. When the truth became clear to them, they did not hesitate or negotiate with it they embraced it fully.
Their words in this verse carry three important lessons for every believer, especially during Ramadan.
1. Belief in Divine Revelation
The first declaration they make is: “We believe in what You have revealed.” This is a statement of complete submission to Allah’s guidance. Revelation is not meant to be partially accepted or selectively followed. True faith means trusting that Allah’s guidance is perfect, wise, and meant for our ultimate success.
For Muslims today, this means strengthening our relationship with the Qur’an during Ramadan. It is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed, making it the perfect time to reconnect with its message—through recitation, reflection, and practical implementation.
2. Following the Messenger
The believers did not stop at believing in revelation; they also said: “We follow the Messenger.” This emphasizes that faith must be demonstrated through obedience to the prophets of Allah.
For the Muslim Ummah today, following the Messenger means following the example and teachings of Muhammad (peace be upon him). His life remains the ultimate model for how to worship Allah, interact with people, and navigate the challenges of life with patience, mercy, and wisdom.
During Ramadan, following the Messenger includes increasing in acts of worship, generosity, patience, and kindness qualities that defined his character throughout his life.
3. Seeking to Be Among the Witnesses
The final part of the supplication is deeply profound: “Write us among those who bear witness.”
The believers did not merely declare their faith; they asked Allah to record them among those who testify to the truth. This reflects humility and awareness that acceptance ultimately comes from Allah alone. It also highlights the responsibility of believers to stand as witnesses to the truth in their words, actions, and character.
A Muslim is meant to embody the message of Islam so clearly that others can see the beauty of faith through their conduct.
A Ramadan Reflection
As we move through the blessed days of Ramadan, this verse invites us to reflect on the sincerity of our faith. Do we only believe, or do we also follow? Do our actions reflect the teachings of the Messenger? Are we striving to live as witnesses to the truth?
Ramadan is a time to renew our covenant with Allah—to strengthen our belief, refine our actions, and realign our lives with the guidance of revelation.
May Allah strengthen our iman, help us truly follow the path of His Messenger, and record us among those who bear witness to the truth.
