CONVERTING TO ISLAM: THE DECLARATION OF SHAHADA (A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE)

By: Raheemat Yusuf, Ajape Sefiu A.

In the Islamic religion, it is believed that everyone is Muslim at birth. Due to this, those who convert are typically referred to as reverts.

The ritual bath, or Ghusl, is a significant purification ritual for Muslim converts.

Also, converting to Islam involves the declaration of faith, which requires one to pronounce the shahāda.

Below is a step-by-step guide:

  • Preparation for Ghusl
  1. Intend to perform Ghusl for conversion to Islam.
  2. Choose a clean and private area.
  3. Remove jewelry, nail polish, and any barrier to water.
Step-by-Step guide for Ghusl
  1. Wash hands to the wrists.
  2. Rinse the mouth and nose.
  3. Wash face.
  4. Wash arms to elbows.
  5. Wash hair, ensuring water reaches the scalp.
  6. Wash the entire body, starting from head to toes.
  7. Pay special attention to areas between fingers, toes, and under nails.
Additional Tips
  1. Use warm water for comfort.
  2. Use soap or cleanser if needed.
  3. Ensure water flows over the entire body.
  4. Avoid using scented products.
  • The declaration of Faith

After Ghusl, the next thing is to pronounce the below shahāda with conviction and understand its meaning.

“Ash Shadoo an La ilaha illa Allah, Wa Ash Shadoo ana Muhammadan rasoolu Allah.”

The translation of which is:

“I bear witness that there is no true god except God (Allah), and I bear witness that Muhammad is the (final) Messenger of God.”

The “Shahada” is the first of the five pillars of Islam. You can say it alone, or you can say it with another Muslim so they can help you.

Post-Ghusl and Shahada

After you’ve bathed the spiritual bath (Ghusl) and pronounced the Shahada, the next thing to do is:

  1. Perform Wudu (ablution) for prayer.
  2. Offer two Rakahs (units) of prayer, expressing gratitude.
  3. Begin practicing Islam, following the Five Pillars.
