HADITH 10 OF AN-NAWAWIS COLLECTION.

Theme: To seek the good and lawful things.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Verily Allah the most high is Pure and He does not accept (anything) except that it is pure. And verily Allah commanded the believers to do that which He has commanded the Messengers. The most high has said: “O Messengers! Eat of good things and do right”. And the most high said: “O believers! Eat of good things that We have provided for you”. Then he the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned a man who after a long journey is dishevelled and dust-coloured. [The man] stretched his hands out towards the sky and says: “O Lord, O Lord, while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful. How is he to be answered [in that state]? “

Commentary.

The hadith introduces the importance of al-tayyeb, that which is good is pure. The concept of purity and goodness applies to numerous aspects in our lives. As muslims we must be careful to enjoy only food and clothing that are halal, use pure speech and hold pure intentions.

The concept of Al-tayyeb.

Another thing derived from the above hadith is the importance of eating food that is tayyeb. This word does not simply mean that the food is halal or comes from a pure source, but it also means that the food is good and beneficial for you. For example, due to allergies, reactions or health issues, some people are restricted from certain foods. As muslims, we should refrain from doing things that harm us, hence certain people should abstain from certain foods.

Allah’s acceptance.

The concept of acceptance is also discussed in the above hadith. Allah only accepts from those who are good and pure. What is this acceptance referring to? What if a person’s food and clothing are impure, will his or her actions be accepted? The answer to the question is a bit tricky.

Five conditions.

The Islamic scholars have agreed on five conditions that must be fulfilled in order for our actions to be accepted. Which are:

  1. The belief that Allah is knowing of all things.
  2. To know the truth and have a sense of what is right.
  3. To have a pure intention with our actions.
  4. To do the action in accordance with the sunnah.
  5. To eat that which is halal.

Acceptance of du’a.

  1. To wear clothes that are simple and humble.
  2. To raise one’s hands towards the sky while making du’a.
  3. To be consistent and persistent in the du’a.
