WHEN YOUR TONGUE BECOMES THE SOURCE OF YOUR PROBLEMS

Have you ever said something in anger and regretted it immediately?

Perhaps you insulted someone during an argument, revealed a secret that was entrusted to you or made a comment that deeply hurt another person.

Sometimes, we forget that words are powerful. A sentence that takes only a few seconds to say can damage a relationship that took years to build.

As Muslims, we must learn to control our tongues and become more conscious of what comes out of our mouths.

SPEAK WHAT IS RIGHT

Allah says:

“O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. “Qur’an 33:70

This verse teaches us the importance of speaking correctly and responsibly.

Our words should reflect truthfulness, fairness and good character.

Being honest does not give us permission to insult people. Correcting someone does not require humiliating them. Expressing disappointment does not mean using abusive language.

We must learn to communicate without causing unnecessary harm.

YOUR WORDS CAN CREATE PROBLEMS YOU DID NOT EXPECT

Think about how easily a small disagreement can become a serious conflict because of careless speech.

A private matter becomes public because someone cannot keep a secret. A friendship ends because of repeated insults. A family disagreement becomes worse because nobody wants to control their anger.

Sometimes, people defend their words by saying, “I was only joking” or “I was angry.”

But the fact that something was said jokingly or in anger does not automatically remove its consequences.

THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK

Before saying something, ask yourself:

– Is what I am about to say true?
– Is it necessary?
– Could it humiliate or hurt someone?
– Am I speaking out of anger?
– Would silence be better in this situation?

You do not have to respond to every comment. You do not have to participate in every discussion. And you do not have to reveal every piece of information you know.

Sometimes, choosing silence is wiser than speaking carelessly.

LEARN TO APOLOGISE WHEN YOUR WORDS HURT SOMEONE

If you have spoken harshly to someone, do not allow pride to prevent you from apologising.

A sincere apology acknowledges the harm caused and makes an effort not to repeat the behaviour.

Also, avoid making promises you do not intend to keep. Words should carry responsibility.

Remember that Allah knows what you say openly and what you conceal.

HEART CHECK

Your tongue can be used to encourage, teach, comfort and remind people of Allah. It can also be used to insult, deceive and destroy relationships. The choice of how you use it is a responsibility.
