YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE RIGHTS OVER YOU

Sometimes, we are very polite to strangers but impatient with the people we live with. We may speak gently to our friends but respond harshly to our parents or siblings.

We may be willing to help people outside our homes while ignoring the needs of those closest to us.

But have you ever stopped to consider that your family members also have rights over you?

Islam does not teach us to show good character only when we are outside. Good manners should also be visible in how we treat the people closest to us.

ALLAH COMMANDS KINDNESS TOWARDS FAMILY

Allah says:

“Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbour, the neighbour farther away, the companion at your side, the traveller…” Qur’an 4:36

This verse reminds us that kindness towards others, including our relatives, is an important part of Islamic conduct.

Our families should not be the people who receive the worst version of our character simply because they are always around us.

FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES GO BEYOND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Supporting your family is not limited to providing money.

You can show care by listening, helping with household responsibilities, speaking respectfully and making time for meaningful conversations.

Children should respect their parents, while parents also have responsibilities towards their children. Spouses have rights and responsibilities towards one another, and relatives should be treated with consideration.

Every family member has a role to play in creating a home where people feel respected and valued.

DO NOT ALLOW SMALL DISAGREEMENTS TO DESTROY FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS

Disagreements are part of family life. People may have different opinions, personalities and expectations.

However, disagreements should not become excuses for insults, cruelty or deliberate humiliation.

Learn to communicate calmly. Apologise when you are wrong, and avoid bringing up painful matters simply to win an argument.

If a family relationship involves abuse or serious harm, seek appropriate help and establish necessary boundaries. Maintaining family ties does not mean accepting abuse.

MAKE YOUR HOME A PLACE OF GOOD CHARACTER

Ask yourself:

– Do I speak respectfully to my family?
– Do I help when there is a need?
– Do I appreciate the sacrifices people make for me?
– Do I make time for meaningful conversations?
– Do I remember my family in my du’a?

You do not need to wait for a special occasion to show appreciation. Small acts of care can make a difference.

HEART CHECK

Do not become so focused on pleasing the outside world that you neglect the people Allah has placed in your life. Your family members deserve kindness, respect and fairness.
