WHAT THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD TAUGHT ABOUT CLEANLINESS: A COMPLETE GUIDE TO PURITY IN ISLAM

Introduction

Cleanliness is one of the most beautiful and important teachings of Islam. It is not merely about having a clean body, wearing beautiful clothes or keeping our homes tidy. In Islam, cleanliness goes much deeper. It involves the purification of the body, clothes, surroundings, heart and soul.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his followers to live clean, healthy, disciplined and dignified lives. He demonstrated through his words and actions that cleanliness is an essential part of a Muslim’s daily life and worship.

Islam places such importance on purification that Allah Almighty praises those who maintain it.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ وَيُحِبُّ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

“Indeed, Allah loves those who constantly repent and loves those who purify themselves.”

(Qur’an 2:222)

This verse reminds us that purification is not just a physical activity; it is also a means of drawing closer to Allah.

Let us explore what Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught about cleanliness and how Muslims can apply these beautiful teachings in everyday life.

1. Cleanliness Is Half of Faith

One of the most famous teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ concerning cleanliness is his statement:

الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ

“Purification is half of faith.”

(Sahih Muslim 223)

This hadith highlights the great importance of purification in Islam.

A Muslim cannot neglect cleanliness and expect to fulfil the teachings of Islam completely. From performing ablution before Salah to maintaining personal hygiene, purification is part of a believer’s everyday responsibilities.

The Prophet ﷺ taught us that being clean should not be something we practise occasionally. It should become a habit and a way of life.

2. The Prophet ﷺ Taught Us to Maintain Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene was an important part of the lifestyle of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

He encouraged Muslims to maintain cleanliness through simple but meaningful practices, including:

  • Washing the hands regularly.
  • Keeping the fingernails trimmed.
  • Cleaning the mouth and teeth.
  • Removing unwanted body hair.
  • Maintaining cleanliness after using the toilet.
  • Bathing when required.
  • Keeping the body free from unpleasant odours.

These practices are connected to the natural disposition (Fitrah) that Allah has created human beings upon.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Five practices are characteristics of the Fitrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the moustache, cutting the nails and plucking the armpit hair.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 5889; Sahih Muslim 257)

This teaches us that personal hygiene is not a modern concept. Islam encouraged cleanliness more than fourteen centuries ago.

Every Muslim should therefore take personal hygiene seriously, not only for personal comfort but also as an act of obedience to Allah.

3. Keeping the Mouth and Teeth Clean

Have you ever wondered why the Prophet ﷺ placed so much emphasis on cleaning the mouth?

He strongly encouraged the use of the Miswak, a natural tooth-cleaning stick traditionally obtained from the Arak tree.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Were it not that I would burden my nation, I would have commanded them to use the Siwak before every prayer.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 887; Sahih Muslim 252)

This hadith shows the importance of oral hygiene in Islam.

The mouth is used for reciting the Qur’an, remembering Allah, speaking to people and engaging in worship. Keeping it clean is therefore a beautiful habit.

Today, Muslims can maintain oral hygiene through the Miswak, toothbrushes, toothpaste and regular dental care.

The important lesson is to keep the mouth clean and avoid unpleasant breath.

4. Cleanliness of Clothes and Physical Appearance

Islam encourages Muslims to dress neatly and maintain a respectable appearance.

Allah says:

يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ

“O children of Adam! Take your adornment at every masjid.”

(Qur’an 7:31)

This verse teaches Muslims to observe cleanliness and present themselves properly when worshipping Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ also taught:

“Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty.”

(Sahih Muslim 91)

A Muslim should therefore avoid unnecessary dirt, unpleasant body odour and untidy clothing.

This does not mean that a person must wear expensive clothes to look beautiful. Islam encourages cleanliness and modesty, not extravagance.

A simple, clean and modest appearance is better than expensive clothing that is dirty or neglected.

5. The Importance of Ablution (Wudu)

One of the most important demonstrations of cleanliness in Islam is Wudu.

Before performing Salah, Muslims must observe the appropriate purification. Wudu involves washing specific parts of the body, including the face, hands and feet, and wiping the head.

Allah says:

“O you who believe! When you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads and wash your feet up to the ankles.”

(Qur’an 5:6)

Wudu reminds Muslims to maintain cleanliness throughout the day.

It also prepares the believer physically and spiritually for standing before Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged his followers to perform ablution properly and consistently.

Therefore, Muslims should never treat Wudu as an insignificant routine. It is an important act of worship.

6. Keeping Our Homes and Surroundings Clean

The teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ extend beyond personal hygiene.

Islam also encourages Muslims to maintain clean homes, streets, mosques, schools and public spaces.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Removing harmful things from the road is charity.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 2989; Sahih Muslim 1009)

Think about the meaning of this beautiful teaching.

Picking up rubbish, removing dangerous objects from pathways and ensuring that people can walk safely are all acts of charity.

This means that keeping our environment clean is not simply a social responsibility. It can also become an act of worship when done with the right intention.

Muslims should avoid throwing rubbish into gutters, polluting waterways, littering public spaces or leaving dirty surroundings for others to clean.

A clean environment protects human health, prevents unpleasant conditions and makes life more comfortable for everyone.

7. Do Not Waste Water While Performing Purification

Although Islam encourages cleanliness, it also teaches moderation.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ demonstrated that purification does not require wasting large quantities of water.

Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ used approximately one Mudd of water for ablution and one Sa’ for bathing.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 201)

This teaches us an important lesson: cleanliness should never become an excuse for extravagance.

When performing Wudu, we should use sufficient water without allowing the tap to run unnecessarily.

Water is a blessing from Allah, and Muslims should appreciate and protect it.

8. Cleanliness After Using the Toilet

Islam provides detailed guidance on maintaining cleanliness after using the toilet.

The Prophet ﷺ taught Muslims to observe proper hygiene and remove impurities from the body and clothing.

This includes practising Istinja, which involves cleaning oneself after relieving oneself, using water where available.

Muslims should also take care to avoid splashing impurities onto their bodies or clothes.

The Prophet ﷺ warned about being careless concerning purification from urine.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 218; Sahih Muslim 292)

This teaching reminds us that cleanliness is not limited to what other people can see. A Muslim should maintain hygiene even in private.

9. Cleanliness of the Heart Is Equally Important

One of the greatest lessons Islam teaches is that cleanliness must go beyond the physical body.

A person may have beautiful clothes, a clean home and a pleasant appearance, yet still carry hatred, jealousy, arrogance and dishonesty in the heart.

Islam encourages believers to purify their hearts from these spiritual diseases.

A clean heart is one that strives to be filled with:

  • Sincerity towards Allah.
  • Love and compassion for others.
  • Humility.
  • Forgiveness.
  • Honesty.
  • Patience.
  • Gratitude.
  • Good intentions.

Allah says:

“The Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit anyone, except one who comes to Allah with a sound heart.”

(Qur’an 26:88–89)

This teaches us that spiritual purity is extremely important.

We should therefore pay attention not only to how clean our bodies are but also to the condition of our hearts.

10. Cleanliness Should Be a Daily Habit, Not an Occasional Practice

The Prophet ﷺ did not teach cleanliness as something Muslims should practise only before attending the mosque or meeting important people.

Rather, cleanliness should be part of everyday life.

A Muslim should make an effort to:

  1. Wake up and maintain personal hygiene.
  2. Brush the teeth and keep the mouth fresh.
  3. Wear clean and modest clothing.
  4. Perform Wudu properly before prayer.
  5. Keep the home and surroundings tidy.
  6. Avoid littering and polluting the environment.
  7. Use water responsibly.
  8. Maintain cleanliness after using the toilet.
  9. Keep the heart free from hatred and jealousy.
  10. Encourage family members and children to practise good hygiene.

When these habits become part of our daily routine, we demonstrate the beautiful teachings of Islam through our actions.

Why Every Muslim Should Take Cleanliness Seriously

Cleanliness has benefits that affect every aspect of human life.

Spiritually: It helps prepare us for worship and reminds us of our responsibility towards Allah.

Physically: Good hygiene helps reduce the spread of germs and supports healthy living.

Socially: Clean people and clean surroundings make communities more comfortable and welcoming.

Morally: Cleanliness encourages discipline, responsibility and consideration for others.

Environmentally: Proper waste disposal and responsible water use help protect the environment.

These benefits show that Islamic teachings about cleanliness are relevant to every generation.

Conclusion: Let Us Follow the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

The teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that cleanliness is much more than appearance. It is a reflection of discipline, faith, responsibility and good character.

A true Muslim should strive to maintain a clean body, pure heart, neat clothing, hygienic home and healthy environment.

We should not wait until we want to pray before taking cleanliness seriously. We should practise it every day because it is part of the beautiful way of life taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Let us teach our children the importance of cleanliness. Let us keep our homes, mosques, schools and communities clean. Let us stop littering, avoid wasting water and become people who make our surroundings better.

Most importantly, let us remember that physical purification and spiritual purification go hand in hand.

May Allah make us among those who love cleanliness, maintain purity and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Ameen.
