Sometimes, a person can be experiencing a painful situation and feel that nobody truly understands what they are going through.

They may speak, explain their difficulties, and seek help, yet still feel unheard.

The Qur’an contains a powerful account of a woman who brought her complaint to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and sought a resolution from Allah. Her story reminds us that Allah hears the concerns of His servants.

WHO WAS KHAWLAH BINT THA’LABAH?

Khawlah bint Tha’labah was a female companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

She experienced a serious marital dispute involving a pre-Islamic practice known as zihar. In this practice, a husband would compare his wife to a woman forbidden to him, using words that effectively treated her as forbidden to him in marriage.

Before Islam established its rulings on this practice, such words could leave a woman in a deeply distressing position.

Khawlah brought her complaint to the Prophet ﷺ, seeking guidance about her situation.

ALLAH HEARD HER COMPLAINT

The opening verses of Surah Al-Mujadilah refer to this woman’s complaint.

Allah says:

“Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing.” Qur’an 58:1

This verse is a powerful reminder that Allah hears what His servants say and knows what they experience.

Khawlah’s situation was not ignored. Her complaint became the occasion for Qur’anic guidance concerning zihar and its consequences.

The subsequent verses, *Qur’an 58:2–4*, explain that zihar is a wrongful statement and establish the required expiation for those who engage in it and then seek to resume marital relations.

WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM HER STORY?

1. Allah hears the person who seeks His help.

Khawlah took her concern to the Prophet ﷺ and directed her complaint to Allah. Her story reminds us that we can turn to Allah with our difficulties, whether they concern our families, finances, health, or personal struggles.

2. Women have the right to seek guidance.

Khawlah did not remain silent about a serious problem affecting her marriage. She sought an answer and brought her concern forward.

Her story reminds us that women can seek religious guidance and that their concerns deserve to be addressed seriously.

3. Islam provides guidance for family matters.

Marriage involves responsibilities, and words spoken during disagreements can have serious consequences.

The Qur’an addressed the practice of zihar and established rules for dealing with it. Muslims should therefore learn the relevant rulings rather than dismissing serious family matters as ordinary arguments.

4. Difficult circumstances can lead to important lessons for others.

Khawlah’s experience became part of the Qur’an’s guidance for the Muslim community. Her story continues to remind believers of Allah’s knowledge, justice, and concern for the affairs of His servants.

WHEN YOU FEEL UNHEARD

Khawlah’s story does not mean every difficulty will be resolved immediately or in the exact way we hope.

However, it reminds us that we can turn to Allah in du’a while also taking appropriate steps to address our problems.

Seek reliable advice, speak to trustworthy people, and pursue appropriate solutions when necessary.

Never assume that expressing your difficulty to Allah is pointless.

CONCLUSION

Khawlah bint Tha’labah’s story is a reminder that Allah hears His servants and that sincere concerns should not be dismissed.

Her experience also teaches us about the importance of seeking guidance, addressing family difficulties responsibly, and trusting Allah while taking practical steps.

The One who hears what you say openly also knows what lies within your heart.

May Allah hear our sincere supplications, guide us through our difficulties, and grant justice and relief to those who are suffering. Ameen.
