YOU CAN START AGAIN AFTER MAKING A TERRIBLE MISTAKE

Have you ever made a mistake so serious that you began to feel unworthy of turning to Allah?

Perhaps you committed a sin you had promised yourself you would never repeat. Perhaps you entered an inappropriate relationship, neglected your prayers, lied to someone you love, or returned to a habit you thought you had overcome.

You feel guilty. You regret your actions. You want to change, but a voice inside you keeps saying, “You have gone too far. How can Allah forgive you after everything you have done?”

If you have ever felt this way, remember that despair is not the answer.

Your mistake does not have to become the end of your story.

NEVER DESPAIR OF ALLAH’S MERCY

Allah gives us a beautiful reminder in the Qur’an:

“Do not despair of the mercy of Allah.” (Qur’an 39:53, part of the verse).

This verse offers hope to those who have wronged themselves through sin.

No matter how serious your past mistakes may be, you should not conclude that Allah’s mercy is beyond your reach.

Allah knows your weaknesses. He knows the struggles you face and the moments when you fall short.

This does not mean that sins are unimportant or that we should deliberately continue doing wrong. Rather, it means that we must never allow guilt to convince us that repentance is pointless.

When you recognise that you have done something wrong, turn back to Allah.

Do not allow shame to keep you away from the very One you need to seek forgiveness from.

WHAT DOES SINCERE REPENTANCE LOOK LIKE?

Repentance, known as tawbah, involves more than feeling bad about what happened.

If you have committed a sin, take practical steps towards changing your situation.

First, stop the sinful action. If you are involved in something that displeases Allah, begin taking steps to leave it.

Second, sincerely regret what you have done. Regret should encourage you to improve rather than convince you that you are beyond hope.

Third, make a sincere intention not to return to the sin. This does not mean you can predict that you will never struggle again. It means you are genuinely committed to leaving the sin when you repent.

Fourth, if you have violated another person’s rights, take appropriate steps to address the harm. This may include returning what belongs to them or making amends where possible and wise.

Do not use repentance as an excuse to continue hurting others.

WHAT IF YOU FALL INTO THE SAME SIN AGAIN?

Some people sincerely repent, make changes, and later find themselves struggling with the same sin.

When this happens, they may feel that their previous repentance was useless.

But falling again does not mean you should give up.

If you fall, repent again. Examine what led to the mistake. Identify the situations, habits, or relationships that make it more difficult for you to resist temptation.

If certain online spaces encourage your bad habits, limit your exposure to them. If particular conversations repeatedly lead you towards wrongdoing, establish boundaries. If you struggle with consistency in worship, start rebuilding your routine with manageable steps.

Do not simply promise to change while leaving every harmful influence untouched.

And do not assume that you can deliberately plan to sin again because you intend to repent later. Sincere repentance requires genuine commitment.

Keep striving, even when the process is difficult.

DO NOT LET YOUR PAST DEFINE YOUR FUTURE

Perhaps people remember your mistakes. Perhaps someone has judged you because of something you did.

You cannot always control what others think, but you can take responsibility for your actions and work towards becoming a better person.

You do not need to announce every private sin to the world. Seek appropriate guidance from a trustworthy, knowledgeable person when you need help, while protecting your privacy and the rights of others.

Let your regret lead you towards better choices.

Return to salah. Read the Qur’an. Make du’a. Seek forgiveness. Choose better company and practise the habits that help you remain steadfast.

Most importantly, never confuse being ashamed of a sin with believing that you are permanently unworthy of Allah’s mercy.

HEART CHECK

Dear young Muslim, you may regret your past, but you do not have to remain trapped in it.

Turn back to Allah with sincerity. Take responsibility for your actions. Make the necessary changes and keep moving towards what is good.

Your journey towards Allah may involve struggles, but do not allow your struggles to make you abandon the journey.

May Allah forgive our sins, accept our repentance, purify our hearts, and make us among those who continually return to Him. Ameen.
