CHEATING IN EXAMS: A FIQH ISSUE EVERY STUDENT SHOULD KNOW
Examination season is approaching.
Some students are revising, others are attending extra lessons, and a few are already planning how to get answers during the examination.
Perhaps someone tells you, “Everybody cheats. If you don’t do it, you will fail.”
But as a Muslim student, have you considered what Islam says about cheating?
Getting a good result is not worth sacrificing your honesty.
WHAT DOES ISLAM SAY ABOUT CHEATING?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
> “Whoever cheats us is not one of us.” Source: Sahih Muslim
This hadith gives a serious warning against cheating and deception.
If an examination is intended to measure your knowledge, secretly obtaining answers or using prohibited assistance misrepresents your abilities.
It is not simply a school matter. It is also an issue of honesty and trust.
COMMON FORMS OF EXAMINATION CHEATING
Cheating can happen in different ways, including:
* Copying answers from another student when it is prohibited.
* Bringing unauthorised notes into the examination hall.
* Using a phone or another prohibited device to obtain answers.
* Paying someone to take an examination on your behalf.
* Obtaining examination questions dishonestly before the examination.
* Impersonating another candidate.
* Helping another student cheat when the rules prohibit such assistance.
These actions can undermine the purpose of an examination and disadvantage students who have prepared honestly.
WHAT IF EVERYONE ELSE IS CHEATING?
The fact that many people are doing something does not make it right.
You may feel afraid that you will receive lower marks than your classmates.
But your responsibility is to act honestly, not to copy every behaviour you see around you.
You cannot control everyone else’s decisions, but you can control your own.
Allah says: “And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].” Qur’an 2:42
This verse reminds Muslims of the importance of truthfulness.
WHAT IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED?
If you have not prepared adequately, cheating may seem like an easy way out.
Instead, focus on what you can still do.
* Revise the most important topics.
* Practise past questions where permitted.
* Ask your teacher to explain difficult areas.
* Study with classmates without breaking examination rules.
* Get enough rest before the examination.
* Manage your time carefully during the paper.
Even if the result is not what you hoped for, you can learn from the experience and prepare better next time.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE ALREADY CHEATED?
Do not assume that your situation cannot improve.
Stop the dishonest behaviour, sincerely repent to Allah and take reasonable steps to correct the harm.
If you have violated examination rules, consider how to address the matter honestly. You may need guidance from a trusted adult or school authority about the appropriate next steps.
Repentance involves turning away from the wrongdoing and making a sincere effort not to repeat it.
YOUR CERTIFICATE SHOULD REPRESENT YOUR EFFORT
A certificate may help you gain admission, secure employment or pursue other opportunities.
But qualifications should reflect genuine achievement rather than deception.
A Muslim should aim to succeed through honest effort, patience and reliance upon Allah.
HEART CHECK
Dear student, when you enter an examination hall, remember that your character matters just as much as your grades.
Prepare honestly. Answer to the best of your ability. Refuse to cheat, even when others encourage you.
Success gained through dishonesty can come with serious consequences, but honest effort builds knowledge, integrity and trust.
