WHEN ENTERTAINMENT BECOMES MORE IMPORTANT THAN SALAH
You plan to watch one short video, but somehow an hour passes.
You open a game and keep playing because you want to reach another level.
You are chatting with friends, watching a series or scrolling through social media when the time for salah arrives.
You tell yourself, “Let me finish this first.”
Then another notification appears.
Another video starts.
Another game begins.
Before you realise it, you have delayed your prayer again.
Does this sound familiar?
Allah says: “Successful indeed are the believers: those who humble themselves in prayer.” Qur’an 23:1–2** — translation of the meaning.
ENTERTAINMENT IS NOT THE ENEMY
Islam does not require you to spend every moment studying or performing acts of worship without rest.
You can enjoy permissible games, sports, comedy, educational videos and time with friends.
The problem begins when entertainment takes priority over your obligations.
If you can remember every episode of a series but repeatedly forget your prayers, it may be time to reconsider how you use your time.
If you can stay awake late to play games but struggle to wake up for Fajr, examine your routine.
If you can respond to every social media notification but keep delaying salah, ask yourself what has become most important in your life.
SALAH IS NOT SOMETHING TO FIT IN WHEN CONVENIENT
Salah is an obligation and a central part of a Muslim’s life.
It should not always be the activity you postpone until everything else is finished.
Your favourite programme can wait.
Your game can be paused.
Your messages can be answered later.
But when the time for prayer arrives, make an effort to fulfil your obligation within its prescribed time.
Do not wait until you feel motivated. Build a routine that helps you remain consistent.
CAN YOU TAKE BACK CONTROL?
1. Set prayer reminders.
Use an accurate prayer timetable for your location and pay attention when the time enters.
2. Pause what you are doing.
When it is time to pray, stop scrolling or playing and prepare for salah.
3. Protect your sleep.
Avoid staying up so late for entertainment that waking for Fajr becomes unnecessarily difficult.
4. Create healthy boundaries.
Decide how much time you will spend gaming, watching videos or using social media.
5. Return to Allah when you fall short.
If you have been neglecting your prayers, do not allow shame to make you give up. Repent sincerely, seek guidance on making up missed prayers according to Islamic teachings, and work on becoming consistent.
ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION
If someone observed how you spend your day, would they see that your relationship with Allah has an important place in your life?
You do not have to abandon every form of entertainment to become a better Muslim.
You need to put things in their proper place.
HEART CHECK
Enjoy what is permissible, but do not let it distract you from what Allah has made obligatory.
Your favourite game may give you temporary excitement, but salah is part of your relationship with the One who gave you life.
May Allah make salah beloved to our hearts and help us use our time in ways that please Him. Ameen.
