THE VALUE OF SIBLINGS IN ISLAM
Your sibling may be the person who annoys you the most.
They borrow your things.
They disturb you.
They expose your embarrassing stories.
They argue with you over food, space or the television.
But behind all those everyday disagreements is something valuable: family.
Islam places great importance on maintaining family ties, and siblings are part of that responsibility.
SIBLINGS ARE NOT YOUR ENEMIES
It is normal for siblings to disagree.
But disagreement should not become hatred.
Do not allow small arguments to destroy a relationship that may become one of your greatest sources of support later in life.
You will grow older.
Your lives may change.
You may move to different places.
Responsibilities may increase.
But the bond of family remains important.
BE KIND EVEN WHEN YOU DISAGREE
You do not have to agree with your sibling about everything.
You can have different personalities, interests and opinions.
But Islam teaches good character.
Avoid insults.
Avoid exposing their private matters.
Avoid humiliating them in front of friends.
Avoid keeping grudges over every small disagreement.
Sometimes being the older or more mature person means choosing peace even when you believe you are right.
DON’T USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO HUMILIATE FAMILY
A sibling’s embarrassing moment does not automatically become content.
Think before posting their pictures or videos.
Would they be comfortable with thousands of people seeing it?
Would you want someone to do the same to you?
Being funny should not come at the cost of another person’s dignity.
SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER
Your sibling may be struggling silently.
They may be facing pressure at school.
They may feel insecure.
They may be struggling with their deen.
They may simply need someone to listen.
You do not have to solve every problem.
Sometimes asking, “Are you okay?” is enough to begin a meaningful conversation.
FAMILY TIES ARE AN ACT OF WORSHIP
Maintaining family relationships is not merely a cultural expectation.
It is part of Islam.
The Prophet ﷺ strongly warned against severing family ties, while also encouraging believers to maintain them.
So the next time your sibling annoys you, remember:
This person is part of your family.
Treat them with the character you hope Allah will reward.
DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE OLDER
Sometimes we appreciate our family more after we have grown up and moved away.
Do not wait until then.
Share.
Help.
Forgive.
Make du’a for your siblings.
Celebrate their successes.
Correct them kindly when necessary.
Protect them when you can.
HEART CHECK
Your siblings may not always be easy to live with, but they are a gift and a responsibility. Treat that relationship with care.
