THE MUSLIM YOUTH AND THE ADDICTION TO NOTIFICATIONS
A phone vibrates.
You check it.
Another notification appears.
You check again.
Someone has replied.
Someone liked your post.
A new video has arrived.
Another message comes in.Before you realise it, several minutes—or even hours—have passed.
For many young people, the phone has become more than a tool. It has become something they constantly feel the need to check.
WHY DOES EVERY NOTIFICATION FEEL IMPORTANT?
Notifications create a sense that something is always happening.
You do not want to miss a message.
You do not want to miss a trend.
You want to know who replied.
You want to see what people are posting.
But constantly checking your phone can train your mind to expect immediate stimulation.
Silence begins to feel uncomfortable.
Waiting becomes difficult.
Even moments meant for worship can become interrupted by the urge to check the screen.
WHAT IS YOUR PHONE TAKING FROM YOU?
Ask yourself honestly:
How much time do I spend scrolling?
How often do I check my phone without a real reason?
Do I reach for my phone immediately after waking up?
Do I check notifications during salah?
Do I stay awake longer because I am scrolling?
Do I spend more time looking at other people’s lives than working on my own?
Your phone may be useful, but usefulness does not mean unlimited use.
DON’T LET YOUR PHONE STEAL YOUR ATTENTION FROM ALLAH
Imagine standing in salah while your mind is waiting for a notification.
You are physically facing the qiblah, but your attention is somewhere else.
The problem is not always the phone itself.
It is the attachment we develop to it.
Give yourself moments when your phone is completely away.
During salah.
While reading Qur’an.
While speaking with family.
Before sleeping.
When you need to think.
CREATE PHONE-FREE MOMENTS
You do not have to throw your phone away.
Start small.
Turn off unnecessary notifications.
Keep your phone away during meals.
Create a period each day without social media.
Do not take your phone to bed if it keeps you awake scrolling.
Give yourself time to sit quietly.
At first, the silence may feel strange.
Then it may begin to feel peaceful.
YOUR ATTENTION IS VALUABLE
Every app is competing for your attention.
Every notification is asking for a small piece of your day.
But you only have a limited amount of time.
Allah says:
«“By time, indeed mankind is in loss.”
— Qur’an 103:1–2»
Time is not something you can store and use later.
Once an hour is gone, it is gone.
TAKE BACK CONTROL
Technology should serve you.
You should not become a servant of every notification.
Choose when to check your phone.
Choose what deserves your attention.
And protect the moments that belong to Allah, your family, your studies, your work and your own growth.
HEART CHECK
You do not need to respond to every notification. Some of the most important things in life arrive in silence.
