ALAL FOOD: WHAT ACTUALLY MAKES FOOD HALAL?

You are hungry.

You see food.

You eat it.

But have you ever stopped to ask:

*“Is this actually halal?”*

For a Muslim, food is not simply about taste. What we consume is also connected to our worship and obedience to Allah.

Allah says:

“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth that is lawful and good…” Qur’an 2:168

WHAT DOES HALAL MEAN?

*Halal* means something that is permissible according to Islamic law.

The opposite is haram, meaning prohibited.

When it comes to food, Muslims are taught to consume what is lawful and wholesome.

Allah says:

“Eat of the good things which We have provided for you…” Qur’an 2:172

NOT EVERYTHING THAT LOOKS HARMLESS IS NECESSARILY HALAL

Some foods are obviously halal, such as many fruits, vegetables, grains and other permissible foods.

But processed foods can be more complicated.

Ingredients may include things such as:

* Gelatin.
* Certain flavourings.
* Animal-derived ingredients.
* Alcohol-containing ingredients.
* Meat from animals that were not slaughtered according to Islamic requirements.

This does not mean you should become paranoid about every food label.

Rather, learn how to check reliable information when there is a genuine concern.

WHAT ABOUT MEAT?

Meat has specific Islamic requirements.

For example, animals that are permissible to eat must be slaughtered according to the applicable Islamic rules.

This is why Muslims often look for trustworthy halal certification or buy meat from reliable halal sources.

HALAL IS MORE THAN FOOD

Islam teaches Muslims to care about what enters their bodies because our actions are connected to our relationship with Allah.

The Prophet said:

> “Indeed, Allah is pure and He accepts only what is pure.”Sahih Muslim

So don’t make halal choices only because your parents told you to.

Understand *why* you are doing it.

HEART CHECK

The next time you pick up a snack, order food online or visit a restaurant, remember: A Muslim doesn’t only ask, “Does it taste good?”

We also ask: “Is it halal?” Choosing halal is part of living your deen in everyday life.
