WHAT IF THERE IS NO WATER? UNDERSTANDING TAYAMMUM
Islam places great importance on purification before salah.
But what happens when you need to pray and there is no water available?
This is where tayammum comes in.
Tayammum is a form of ritual purification using clean earth or a suitable earthly surface when water cannot be used under the conditions recognised in Islamic law.
Allah says:
“And if you do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it.” Qur’an 5:6
WHEN CAN TAYAMMUM BE USED?
Tayammum is not simply an alternative to wudu whenever someone does not feel like using water.
It is allowed in circumstances such as when:
* Water genuinely cannot be found.
* Using water would cause significant harm because of illness or injury.
* There is not enough water for purification and essential needs.
* A person cannot reasonably access water.
The exact details vary according to the circumstances and school of jurisprudence.
HOW IS TAYAMMUM PERFORMED?
The basic process involves:
1. Making the intention for purification.
2. Using clean earth or an appropriate earthly surface.
3. Wiping the face.
4. Wiping the hands according to the method taught by the school of jurisprudence being followed.
Because there are differences concerning some details, it is useful to learn the practical method from a knowledgeable teacher.
TAYAMMUM IS NOT “EASY MODE” WUDU
You cannot simply choose tayammum because you don’t want to walk to the bathroom.
If water is available and can safely be used, normal purification should generally be performed.
Tayammum is a concession Allah has provided for genuine circumstances.
ALLAH DOES NOT WANT UNNECESSARY HARDSHIP
At the end of the purification verse, Allah says:
> “Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favour upon you…”Qur’an 5:6
This is one of the beautiful things about Islamic law.
There are rules, but there are also concessions when genuine difficulties arise.
