WHEN YOU DISAGREE WITH YOUR PARENTS
As you grow older, you begin making your own decisions.
You develop your own opinions.
You have your own goals.
And sometimes, those opinions may be different from your parents’.
You may disagree about your education, career, friends, marriage, clothing, social life or other personal decisions.
But disagreement does not give us permission to disrespect our parents.
Allah says: “And We have commanded people to honour their parents. Their mothers bore them through hardship upon hardship, and their weaning takes two years. So be grateful to Me and your parents. To Me is the final return.”Qur’an 31:14
Allah also teaches us: “But if they pressure you to associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them, but keep their company in this world courteously.”Qur’an 31:15
YOU CAN DISAGREE WITHOUT BEING DISRESPECTFUL
Having a different opinion doesn’t automatically make you a bad child.
But how you communicate that disagreement matters.
You don’t have to shout.
You don’t have to insult them.
You don’t have to slam doors.
You don’t have to say hurtful things simply because you are angry.
You can explain your position calmly.
You can listen.
You can ask questions.
And you can seek advice from someone trustworthy when necessary.
RESPECT DOESN’T MEAN YOU CANNOT HAVE AN OPINION
Islam teaches kindness towards parents, but it also teaches that obedience to people does not come before obedience to Allah.
If a parent asks you to do something that Allah has clearly prohibited, you should not obey that command.
But even then, Qur’an 31:15 teaches us to maintain **courtesy and good companionship**.
This is an important balance.
REMEMBER WHAT YOUR PARENTS HAVE DONE FOR YOU
As young people, we can sometimes focus on what our parents don’t give us.
But take a moment to remember what they have done.
The sacrifices.
The sleepless nights.
The food.
The school fees.
The protection.
The advice.
The prayers.
They may not always get everything right, because parents are human too.
But that doesn’t mean their sacrifices should be forgotten.
CHOOSE YOUR WORDS CAREFULLY
You may win an argument and still lose the peace in your relationship.
Before responding to your parents, ask yourself:
“Can I say this respectfully?”
If you are too angry, take a moment before speaking.
Make du’a for them.
Try to understand their concerns.
HEART CHECK
Remember that one day, you may look back and wish you had spoken more gently. You can grow into an independent adult without becoming disrespectful to your parents. Be firm when necessary,be respectful always and ask Allah to bless your parents and guide you to treat them with kindness.
